A New Price Tier Sparks Outrage

Epic Games is facing a wave of criticism from the Fortnite community. The issue? A new ‘Mythic’ pricing tier introduced for the highly anticipated Avatar: Fire and Ash crossover. Players argue that cosmetic prices have finally crossed a line.

For years, Fortnite has survived and thrived on its free-to-play model, supported entirely by optional cosmetic purchases. But the latest update has pushed things too far for many fans. The new Mythic-tier skins, inspired by James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi sequel, are hitting the Item Shop with unprecedented price tags.

Breaking Down the Cost

Under the new pricing structure, individual Mythic-tier character skins are listed at 2,800 V-Bucks each. That is roughly $25 in real-world currency for a single digital outfit. If you want the complete Fire and Ash mega-bundle—which includes three character models, back blings, pickaxes, and a specialized glider—you will need to shell out a staggering 5,500 V-Bucks.

To put that in perspective, a standard Legendary skin previously capped out at 2,000 V-Bucks. Many crossover skins, like those from Marvel or Star Wars, typically retail between 1,500 and 1,800 V-Bucks. Epic’s pricing strategy has been shifting for a while now. When Fortnite first launched, a legendary skin was the pinnacle of in-game luxury. Now, it feels like a baseline.

“This is getting ridiculous,” wrote one user on the FortniteBR subreddit in a post that quickly gained thousands of upvotes. “We went from paying fifteen bucks for a premium crossover skin to almost thirty. It’s a digital model. You can’t even trade it.”

Why Players Are Angry

The community’s frustration goes beyond just the raw numbers. Many fans feel Epic Games is slowly squeezing its player base. Over the past year, Epic has experimented with higher-priced items, including premium car bodies for Rocket Racing and expensive instrument skins for Fortnite Festival.

The Avatar: Fire and Ash collection represents the first time standard Battle Royale skins have been locked behind this new, higher Mythic price wall. It is not just about the skins themselves, either. Players are also pointing out that Fortnite’s V-Buck bundles do not align easily with these new prices. To buy a 2,800 V-Buck skin, players must purchase the $22.99 V-Buck pack, which grants 2,800 V-Bucks exactly. However, if they want any accompanying gear, they are forced to buy the next tier up—the $89.99 pack—or make multiple smaller transactions that cost more in the long run.

Epic’s Silence and What Comes Next

Epic Games has not yet commented publicly on the backlash. Historically, the developer has sometimes adjusted prices or offered partial refunds in V-Bucks when community anger reached a boiling point. However, with massive licensing fees attached to Disney and James Cameron’s properties, a price drop might not be so easy to negotiate this time.

For now, the Fortnite community is organizing soft boycotts. Several prominent content creators have urged their followers to skip the Avatar: Fire and Ash shop entirely.

“Vote with your wallet,” tweeted Fortnite creator and news commentator ShiinaBR. “If we buy these now, 2,800 V-Bucks will become the new normal for every major crossover.”

Whether Epic Games will hold the line or bow to player pressure remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the gap between casual players and premium cosmetics has never been wider.
