Epic Games Blocks Fortnite Live Lobby Stats in Chapter 7

Epic Games has restricted its API in Chapter 7, breaking Fortnite Tracker’s live lobby feature and sparking anger among competitive players.

Fortnite Chapter 7 has arrived with plenty of gameplay changes, but one unannounced tweak behind the scenes is causing a massive uproar in the competitive community. Epic Games has quietly updated its public API, introducing strict new privacy measures that have effectively disabled live lobby tracking. The change has left Fortnite Tracker, the go-to platform for player statistics, unable to display real-time match data, sparking widespread frustration among streamers, pros, and casual players alike.

For years, the Tracker Network has been an essential tool for the Fortnite community. By plugging into Epic’s public API, the site allowed users to look up their opponents’ stats, track their own historical progress, and analyze live lobbies as matches loaded. But after the latest Chapter 7 patch rolled out, players opening the live tracker were met with blank screens and error messages. The tool could no longer fetch the data required to show who was sharing their island.

What Changed in the API?

The issue stems from a sudden shift in how Epic Games handles player privacy. In the new update, Epic restricted the endpoints that third-party developers use to query live matchmaking data. Specifically, the API no longer broadcasts the unique account identifiers of players currently loading into a lobby. Without these identifiers, external sites can’t cross-reference player profiles or display their stats in real time.

Tracker Network quickly confirmed the disruption on social media, explaining that the functionality is currently broken due to these server-side changes. While individual profile lookups still work if a player has their privacy settings set to public, the ability to scan an entire 100-player lobby simultaneously is gone. It’s still unclear whether this was an intentional security hardening measure or an accidental byproduct of a larger system overhaul.

Competitive Players React to the Blackout

The competitive scene has reacted with immediate backlash. For high-level players and tournament contenders, live lobby stats were more than just a novelty. They served several crucial practical purposes.

  • Detecting stream snipers: Popular content creators relied on live trackers to see if the same players were repeatedly queueing into their games, helping them catch and report malicious stream snipers.
  • Monitoring matchmaking fairness: Competitive players used the data to verify if skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) was functioning properly in their regions.
  • Identifying cheaters: Spotting accounts with abnormally high win rates or impossible headshot ratios in a live lobby allowed players to stay alert and report suspicious activity faster.

“This completely ruins our ability to verify who we’re playing against,” said one competitive Fortnite player on Reddit. “If you’re in a high-tier lobby, you want to know if there’s someone suspicious in the game before you lose your tournament run to a cheater.” Streamers have also voiced their disappointment, noting that the lack of transparency makes it much harder to manage their live broadcasts safely.

Privacy vs. Community Tools

Epic Games has historically walked a fine line between protecting user privacy and supporting its robust creator ecosystem. Over the years, the developer has gradually added more in-game privacy options, allowing players to hide their matchmaking delay, anonymize their names in-game, and opt out of public stat sharing entirely. From Epic’s perspective, restricting the API might simply be the next logical step in protecting players from toxic behavior, target-focusing, and third-party data scraping.

However, the sudden nature of this change—without any prior warning to developers or the community—has left a bitter taste. Third-party developers like those at Tracker Network invest significant time and resources into building tools that keep the community engaged. Cutting off access overnight without communication disrupts not just the developers, but the millions of players who visit these sites daily.

What Lies Ahead?

So far, Epic Games hasn’t issued an official statement regarding the API changes or whether they intend to offer a workaround for verified tracking platforms. In the past, the developer has occasionally rolled back controversial API limitations or introduced whitelist systems for approved partner sites. Whether they’ll do so this time remains to be seen.

For now, Fortnite Tracker users will have to get used to a much more opaque experience. While you can still brag about your overall lifetime wins and check your K/D ratio on your personal profile, the era of knowing exactly who you’re fighting before the battle bus even takes off appears to be over.
