Epic Games’ latest privacy API changes have disrupted Fortnite Tracker, forcing a major overhaul of how competitive player statistics are displayed.

Epic Games Privacy Update Forces Fortnite Tracker Redesign

For years, Fortnite Tracker has been the digital home for anyone trying to prove their skills. It did not matter if you were a casual player bragging about a crown win or a seasoned pro tracking your Power Rankings. The site had your numbers. But that massive database just took a heavy hit.

Epic Games recently rolled out sweeping changes to its backend API. The developer decided to prioritize player privacy, making account statistics private by default. It is a massive shift. Suddenly, third-party tracking sites lost automatic access to millions of player profiles. For Tracker Network, the company behind Fortnite Tracker, this meant their core matchmaking and competitive leaderboards went dark almost overnight.

The End of Automatic Tracking

Before this update, anyone could type a player’s in-game name into Fortnite Tracker and pull up their entire history. You could see their kill-to-death ratio, match wins, and tournament placements. It was automatic. But Epic’s new API settings have locked those doors. Now, if a player does not explicitly change their settings inside the Fortnite game client to allow public sharing, their stats remain invisible to external tools.

This change has left massive holes in competitive matchmaking data. Many players do not even know their profiles are now hidden. Consequently, tournament leaderboards on the tracker have started showing incomplete data, distorting the true competitive hierarchy.

Why Epic Pulled the Plug

Epic Games has not hidden its desire to protect its player base, which includes millions of minors. By locking down stats by default, the developer aims to curb toxicity. In-game bullying often starts when teammates look up each other’s stats mid-match only to mock someone with a lower win rate. Hiding this data by default acts as a shield.

However, the competitive community views it differently. For aspiring pros, public stats are their resume. Without verifiable match histories, proving your skill level to potential esports organizations or finding high-level scrimmage partners becomes incredibly difficult.

How Fortnite Tracker Is Adapting

Faced with a broken system, the developers at Tracker Network had to scramble. They are currently overhauling their platform to keep competitive tracking alive. The solution requires a much more active approach from the community.

To get around the API restrictions, Fortnite Tracker is introducing a new manual verification system. Players must now link their Epic Games accounts directly to the tracker website. Once linked, the platform can request permission to read the private data directly from Epic’s servers, bypassing the public API blocks.

The tracker is also redesigning how it calculates regional Power Rankings. Instead of scanning entire lobbies automatically, the site will rely heavily on scraped tournament PDFs and live in-game leaderboard feeds. It is a clunkier process, but it ensures that official competitive placements remain accurate.

What This Means for the Future

This is not the first time a major game developer has locked down its API, and it likely won’t be the last. Companies like Riot Games and Activision Blizzard have long maintained strict control over who can access player data. Epic Games is simply catching up to industry standards.

For casual players, the change will go largely unnoticed. But for the grinders, the analysts, and the competitive scene, the golden age of effortless stat-sleuthing is officially over. Everyone will have to opt-in if they want to stay on the radar.
