Fortnitemares 2026 kicks off in Fortnite with the surprise arrival of legendary horror movie villain skins in the Item Shop.

Iconic Killers Invade the Item Shop

Epic Games just dropped a massive surprise for Fortnite players to kick off this year’s Halloween festivities. On Tuesday night, the Fortnite Item Shop updated without warning, debuting some of the most highly anticipated slasher icons in the game’s history. Fans have spent years begging for these crossovers. Now, Fortnitemares 2026 is officially underway with a terrifying bang.

The headliners of this unexpected drop are Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Ghostface from the Scream franchise. Both characters come with their own dedicated cosmetics, giving players a chance to stalk the battle royale island as horror royalty. It is a major coup for Epic, which has slowly been collecting major pop culture icons over the years.

“We’ve been working behind the scenes to secure these legends for a long time,” an Epic Games spokesperson said in a brief statement. “Fortnitemares is always our favorite time of the year, and we wanted to deliver something truly special for the community this time around.”

Pricing and Cosmetic Bundles

The Ghostface outfit is already proving to be a massive hit. It features his signature tattered black robes and the iconic white mask. For 1,500 V-Bucks, players get the skin along with the “Voice Changer” back bling. A separate bundle, priced at 2,200 V-Bucks, throws in a custom “Buck 120” hunting knife pickaxe and a unique emote where the character cleanly wipes blood off the blade.

Freddy Krueger is equally impressive. The dream demon sports his iconic dirty red-and-green striped sweater and brown fedora. Epic went all out on his clawed glove, turning it into a built-in harvesting tool. When you swing it, sparks fly off metal surfaces with a chilling screech. Freddy is available for 1,800 V-Bucks, which includes a “Boiler Room” loading screen and a traversal emote that makes players run as if they are chasing someone in a nightmare.

Map Changes and Spooky Gameplay Updates

But the update isn’t just about spending V-Bucks. Epic Games has also transformed the battle royale island itself.

A heavy, dark fog now blankets the map, making long-range firefights much trickier. The center of the island has morphed into a decaying, haunted carnival filled with creepy mini-games and jump-scare mechanics. Epic has also unvaulted some fan-favorite Halloween weapons. Players can once again hunt down opponents with the Wood Stake Shotgun and the classic Pumpkin Launcher.

To make things even more intense, a new boss NPC has taken over the shattered ruins of Whispering Pines. Players who dare to venture into the foggy woods can challenge a rogue slasher to unlock a free mythic weapon: the Fiend Hunter Crossbow. This weapon does double damage to the cube monsters that have started spawning near corrupted areas of the map. Defeating the boss also rewards players with a unique lobby track that plays classic horror synth music.

More Horrors Waiting in the Shadows

Gamers are already sharing their reactions online. Social media platforms like X and Reddit exploded with screenshots of players recreating classic movie scenes in-game. “I can’t believe I’m actually playing as Freddy Krueger in Fortnite,” one Reddit user wrote in a viral thread. “The glove animations are perfect. Epic absolutely nailed this.”

The developers have hinted that this is only the first wave of the event. Data miners have already found files suggesting that more spooky collaborations could arrive before October 31. Speculation points toward a potential crossover with another classic franchise, though Epic remains tight-lipped.

For now, players can log in and grab the new horror outfits before they rotate out of the shop. If previous Fortnitemares events are any indication, these skins won’t stay in the store forever. They will likely vanish once November hits, leaving latecomers in the dark until next year.
