Fortnitemares 2026 Adds Freddy Krueger Amid Pricing Backlash
Epic Games kicked off Fortnitemares 2026 with a surprise Freddy Krueger skin, but players are furious over the expensive, unskippable bundle pricing.
Halloween has officially arrived in the loop. Epic Games kicked off its highly anticipated Fortnitemares 2026 event early Tuesday morning, bringing the usual spooky atmosphere, map changes, and unvaulted weapons. But it was a surprise shop update that stole the show—and ignited a massive debate across the gaming community.
Without any prior teaser, iconic horror villain Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street finally materialized in the Fortnite Item Shop. Fans have spent years begging for the dream demon to join the battle royale. Now he is here, complete with his signature striped sweater, battered fedora, and bladed glove. Yet, the initial wave of excitement quickly soured for many players when they saw the price tags.
A Dream Collaboration with a Nightmare Price Tag
Epic Games released the crossover as part of the “Springwood Nightmare” set. The bundle includes the Freddy Krueger outfit with two select styles—one classic and one heavily burned movie-accurate version. It also comes with the “Boiler Room” back bling, the “Dream Claws” harvesting tool, and a creepy “Jump Rope” traversal emote that plays the classic nursery rhyme from the films.
The entire bundle costs 2,800 V-Bucks. On paper, it looks like a standard crossover pack. But there is a catch. Unlike previous Fortnitemares collaborations where players could purchase skins individually, Epic has locked Freddy Krueger behind the bundle. Players cannot buy the character skin on its own for the typical 1,500 V-Bucks price point.
This decision has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many long-time fans. The only standalone items available are the pickaxe for 800 V-Bucks and the emote for 500 V-Bucks. If you want to drop from the Battle Bus as the master of dreams, you must buy the entire package.
Gamers React to Forced Bundling
Social media lit up within minutes of the Item Shop reset. On Reddit’s Fortnite community, a thread discussing the pricing quickly racked up thousands of comments. Many users criticized Epic’s shift toward forced bundling, a trend that has slowly crept into the game over the last year.

“I’ve waited literally five years for Freddy Krueger,” one user wrote. “But I don’t care about the back bling or the emote. Forcing us to pay nearly thirty dollars’ worth of V-Bucks just to get the skin is incredibly anti-consumer.”
Others pointed out that Epic’s recent V-Bucks price adjustments make the bundle even more expensive in real-world currency. To get 2,800 V-Bucks, players who do not have a leftover balance must purchase the $22.99 pack, leaving them with just a tiny amount of leftover virtual change.
Still, not everyone is upset. Some die-hard horror collectors are just happy the licensing issues were finally resolved. Rumors of a Freddy Krueger skin have circulated since Chapter 2, often stalled by complex rights issues surrounding the Wes Craven estate. “Honestly, I don’t care about the price,” a player shared on X. “We got Freddy in Fortnite. That’s a sentence I never thought I’d say. My wallet is ready.”
What Else is New in Fortnitemares 2026?
Beyond the controversial shop update, Fortnitemares 2026 offers plenty of content for players to sink their teeth into. The beloved Horde Rush mode has returned with new bosses and upgraded rewards. PvE fans can team up to fight waves of Cube Monsters and earn free cosmetic rewards, including a creepy wrap and a loading screen designed by a community artist.
The map has also undergone a dark transformation. Fog now blankets the island during the mid-game phases, reducing visibility and making matches feel much more intense. Witch Huts have popped up in the wild, offering players a chance to trade gold bars for Witch Brooms, which serve as an excellent mobility tool for escaping tight situations.
Epic Games has not commented on the pricing backlash. It is highly unlikely the studio will alter the shop structure now that the event is live, but the community’s response shows that players are growing weary of aggressive monetization. For now, players will have to decide if surviving the nightmare is worth the steep admission fee.
