Fortnite Players Demand Competitive Ban on Glitched Halloween Skin
Fortnite’s new Nightmare Shadow skin is causing chaos in ranked matches, with players calling the glitched, hard-to-see cosmetic flat-out pay-to-win.
The Spooky Season Brings Unwanted Invisibility
Fortnite’s annual Halloween celebration is usually a time for spooky fun, wacky weapons, and creepy cosmetics. But this year, the Fortnitemares 2026 event has landed Epic Games in hot water with its competitive community. The source of the outrage is the brand-new ‘Nightmare Shadow’ skin. What was supposed to be a cool, ghostly outfit has quickly turned into a competitive nightmare, with players calling it a blatant pay-to-win cosmetic due to severe visibility bugs.
It did not take long for players to notice something was off. In low-light areas of the map, or during the in-game night cycle, the skin becomes nearly impossible to track. Its dark, shifting textures fail to render properly under certain conditions. The result? A silhouette that blends almost perfectly into dark corners, shadows, and wooden structures. In a fast-paced shooter where milliseconds dictate who wins a fight, being virtually invisible is a massive, unfair advantage.
The Competitive Outcry
Frustration is boiling over in the ranked and tournament scenes. Clips of players getting eliminated by seemingly invisible opponents are flooding social media. Professional player Marcus ‘Sync’ Thompson shared one such moment on X, showing his point of view during a high-stakes arena match. Thompson was suddenly eliminated by an enemy crouching in a dark wooden box. Even on repeat viewings, the opponent was barely a faint smudge on the screen.
“You literally cannot see them,” Thompson said. “I am playing for money, and I am getting sent back to the lobby by a shadow hiding in a corner. It is a joke. Epic needs to disable this skin in competitive queues right now.”
The issue is compounded by the different graphic settings players use. On high-end consoles, the heavy shadows make the skin disappear entirely into the darkness. Meanwhile, PC players using ‘Performance Mode’ to boost their frame rates report a different kind of glitch. For them, the skin often renders as a flat, featureless black void, stripped of any lighting details that would normally help define a player’s silhouette. No matter the platform, the skin is broken.

A History of Pay-to-Win Cosmetics
This is far from the first time Epic Games has faced this exact dilemma. Fortnite has a long history of cosmetic skins causing competitive balance issues. Years ago, the customizable Superhero skins faced a massive backlash when players realized they could make them solid black, allowing them to hide in dark corners. Epic eventually had to patch the game to prevent players from using matching dark colors. Later, the green plastic Toy Soldier skins had to be modified because they blended too easily into the island’s grassy fields.
History is repeating itself, and competitive players have run out of patience. On the r/FortniteCompetitive subreddit, a thread demanding an immediate ban on the Nightmare Shadow skin quickly reached the top of the forum. Players point out that the issue is particularly devastating during late-game moving zones, where dozens of players are crammed into tight, dark builds.
“If you are wearing this skin, you are playing on easy mode,” wrote one Reddit user. “People are dropping real money just to get a competitive edge. That is the literal definition of pay-to-win. It ruins the integrity of the game.”
Will Epic Games Step In?
While casual players might find the visual glitch amusing, the stakes are incredibly high for the competitive community. With tournaments and cash prizes on the line, players argue that allowing a glitched cosmetic to remain active undermines the entire esport ecosystem.
So far, Epic Games has not officially disabled the skin in competitive playlists. However, community managers have acknowledged on social media that the team is investigating “unintended rendering issues” affecting several new Fortnitemares cosmetics. Historically, the developer has been relatively quick to disable problematic items, often offering V-Bucks refunds or modifying the cosmetics in a later patch.
Until a fix is deployed, competitive grinders are urging their peers to keep up the pressure. For now, anyone entering Ranked mode should keep a very close eye on the shadows.
