Fortnite to Return to iPhones in UK Under New Digital Law

Epic Games is bringing Fortnite back to iOS in the UK, taking advantage of the newly enforced Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act.

Fortnite is officially making its way back to iPhones in the United Kingdom. Epic Games confirmed the move following the formal enforcement of the UK’s Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act, a landmark piece of legislation designed to rein in tech giants.

It has been a long, frustrating wait for British gamers. Apple kicked Fortnite off the App Store in 2020 during a bitter legal dispute over in-app payment systems. For four years, iOS users in the UK had to rely on cloud streaming workarounds or switch to Android devices to get their battle royale fix. Now, the regulatory tide has turned.

How the DMCC Act Changes the Game

The newly enforced DMCC Act gives the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) sweeping powers to tackle digital monopolies. Tech firms designated with “Strategic Market Status” must open their platforms to rival businesses. Apple is almost certain to receive this designation.

Under the new rules, Apple can no longer block alternative app marketplaces or force developers to use its proprietary payment system. Epic Games plans to seize this opportunity by launching its own Epic Games Store on iOS in the UK. This marketplace will serve as the launchpad for Fortnite’s return.

Tim Sweeney, the outspoken CEO of Epic Games, welcomed the British legislation on social media. He confirmed that Epic is moving forward with plans to bring both its digital storefront and Fortnite back to UK iPhones. Sweeney praised the UK government for passing laws that foster competition and offer consumers real choices.

Timeline for the UK Launch

When will players actually get to download the game? Epic Games targets a launch sometime in 2025. The exact timing depends on how quickly the CMA designates Apple under the new framework and the speed of Apple’s compliance.

The UK is following a path already paved by the European Union. Earlier this year, the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) forced Apple to allow alternative app stores on iOS within member states. Epic has already taken advantage of this, launching its store for European iPhone users. British lawmakers wanted to ensure UK consumers did not miss out on the same digital freedoms as their continental neighbors.

The Long Feud and Future Hurdles

The battle between Epic and Apple began when Epic attempted to bypass Apple’s 30% cut on in-game purchases. Apple declared it a breach of contract and pulled Fortnite immediately. Epic sued, claiming Apple ran an illegal monopoly. While US courts largely sided with Apple on antitrust grounds, they did rule that Apple must let developers link to outside payment options.

Now, legislation is achieving what the court system could not. The CMA’s new Digital Markets Unit will oversee compliance in the UK. If companies like Apple refuse to play ball, they face severe consequences, including fines of up to 10% of their global annual turnover.

However, the transition may not be seamless. In the EU, Apple complied with the law but introduced a controversial “Core Technology Fee” of €0.50 per annual install for popular apps. Epic heavily criticized this fee as an attempt to stifle competition. The CMA will need to monitor Apple’s UK compliance closely to ensure similar fees do not undermine the spirit of the DMCC Act.

What This Means for Mobile Gaming

For British iPhone owners, the news is a massive win. They will soon have a direct, native way to play Fortnite again. More broadly, it opens the door for other developers to establish their own mobile stores. This could lead to:

  • Lower prices on in-game content due to reduced store fees.
  • More diverse app distribution channels.
  • Increased innovation in mobile software.

The walled gardens of mobile ecosystems are finally coming down, and the UK mobile market is about to look very different.
