Fortnite Wishlist Gifting Lets Players Buy Vaulted Skins

Epic Games launches a new Fortnite registry feature, letting players gift vaulted skins and cosmetics directly to friends.

Fortnite players have spent years complaining about the Item Shop rotation. You log in, check the store, and find out the skin you wanted missed the cut again. It is a frustrating cycle of waiting and hoping. Epic Games is finally changing the rules of the game with a major update to its gifting system.

The developer just rolled out a new “Wishlist Gifting” feature. It is a simple concept on paper, but it completely alters how players trade and acquire rare cosmetics. For the first time, you can set up a public registry of the skins, emotes, and pickaxes you want most. Your friends can then browse this list and purchase those items for you—even if the cosmetics are currently locked away in Epic’s digital vault.

This bypasses the strict daily rotation that has defined Fortnite’s economy for over half a decade.

How the Registry Works

Setting up a registry is straightforward. Within the in-game Item Shop, players can flag specific cosmetics to add to their personal wishlist. To make this work for gifting, you have to set your wishlist visibility to public. Once that is done, anyone on your friend list can view your registry at any time.

If a friend wants to surprise you, they do not have to wait for Epic to put that specific skin back on the virtual shelves. They can open your wishlist, select the vaulted item, spend their V-Bucks, and send it directly to your locker.

There are a few guardrails in place to keep the system fair:

  • Players must be in-game friends for at least 48 hours before they can send or receive gifts.
  • Accounts must have two-factor authentication enabled to participate in gifting.
  • The sender must have a sufficient balance of V-Bucks, as direct cash purchases are not supported for wishlist gifting.

Breaking the Vault

The ability to purchase vaulted items is the real talking point here. Normally, when a skin leaves the Item Shop, it can disappear for months—sometimes even years. This artificial scarcity is a deliberate business model. It creates a sense of urgency, forcing players to buy items immediately out of fear they might never see them again.

By allowing wishlist gifting for vaulted gear, Epic is softening this stance. It gives the community a legitimate path to acquire highly sought-after legacy skins without waiting for a random shop update. However, there are still some limits. Epic has not made every single piece of retired content available. Extremely exclusive items, like old Battle Pass skins or promotional tie-ins with expired licenses, remain off-limits.

Still, for standard Item Shop cosmetics that simply fell out of rotation, the system is a massive quality-of-life upgrade.

Cracking Down on Account Selling

For years, Fortnite has battled a black market of account selling. Players often risk permanent bans to buy entire accounts just to get their hands on a single vaulted skin. This new wishlist registry could deal a heavy blow to those illicit sellers.

Since players can now gift older items safely through official channels, the demand for sketchy account transfers is expected to drop. It makes the entire economy feel much more modern and less restrictive, offering a secure alternative to risky third-party websites.

Why Now?

Epic’s decision to launch wishlist gifting comes at a time when the studio is looking for fresh ways to keep players engaged and spending. Fortnite’s player base is massive, but the traditional daily shop model can sometimes frustrate users who feel ignored by the algorithm. By putting the power in the hands of the community, Epic is encouraging social spending.

It is a win-win for the developer. Players get the exact items they want, while Epic sees a potential surge in V-Bucks purchases as friends buy gifts for one another. It also takes some of the sting out of the constant complaints about repetitive store rotations, which have flooded social media platforms like Reddit and X for months.

For the average squad, this means birthdays and holidays just got a lot easier to plan. You no longer have to guess what your friend wants or wait for a lucky shop reset. You just open their profile, pick an item off the list, and hit send.
