Fortnite Returns to iOS in Japan via Epic Games Store

Epic Games officially launches Fortnite on iOS in Japan, taking advantage of the country’s strict new smartphone competition laws to bypass Apple’s fees.

Fortnite is finally back on iPhones in Japan. Epic Games has officially launched its dedicated Epic Games Store on iOS in the country, capitalizing on newly enforced regulations designed to break up big tech monopolies. The move represents a major milestone in Epic’s long-running war against Apple’s ecosystem controls.

For Japanese gamers, this ends a four-year drought. Epic’s flagship battle royale game was kicked off the global App Store in 2020 after the developer tried to bypass Apple’s 30% payment processing fees. Since then, iPhone users could only play the game via cloud streaming services. Now, they can run the software natively on their devices once again.

The Law That Cracked Apple’s Wall

This return was not negotiated through a peace treaty between the two tech giants. Instead, it was forced by Japanese lawmakers. The country recently enacted the Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software, a regulatory framework heavily inspired by the European Union’s Digital Markets Act.

Under these new rules, dominant platform operators like Apple and Google are legally prohibited from blocking third-party app stores or preventing developers from using alternative billing systems. The penalties for non-compliance are severe. Companies that violate the law risk fines of up to 20% of their domestic revenue, a figure that can rise to 30% for repeat offenses. Faced with these numbers, Apple had little choice but to open up iOS in the Japanese market.

How Japanese Players Can Get Fortnite

Getting the game back on an iPhone requires a few more steps than a standard App Store download. Because Apple still controls the operating system, users have to navigate through several system prompts to install Epic’s store.

  • Players must visit the official Epic Games website on their iPhones.
  • They need to authorize the installation of a third-party marketplace through their device settings.
  • Once the Epic Games Store is installed, they can download Fortnite directly.

Epic has criticized Apple for making this process unnecessarily complicated, referring to the multiple warning pop-ups as “scare screens” designed to discourage users. Despite the friction, the company expects high adoption rates given the immense popularity of the franchise in Japan.

A Lucrative Market for Mobile Gaming

Japan is one of the most profitable mobile gaming markets in the world, and iOS holds a dominant market share of over 60% in the country. This makes the Japanese launch a massive financial opportunity for Epic Games. Unlike the App Store’s hefty commission rates, the Epic Games Store only takes a 12% cut of developer revenues, allowing creators to keep a much larger share of their earnings.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has long argued that lower store fees will lead to better prices and more innovation for consumers. The company hopes its success in Japan and Europe will inspire other nations to pass similar open-platform legislation.

While the United States has yet to pass a federal law equivalent to Japan’s new regulations, Epic continues to fight its legal battles on multiple fronts. For now, the launch in Japan represents a significant shift in how mobile apps are distributed, proving that the era of the exclusive mobile app store monopoly is slowly coming to an end.
