Epic Games’ new private-by-default settings are wiping out public leaderboards and leaving competitive Fortnite scouts in the dark.

Fortnite Privacy Update Wipes Leaderboards and Blinds Scouts

Epic Games recently rolled out Chapter 7 of Fortnite, bringing massive map changes, fresh weapons, and a quiet setting adjustment that has completely derailed the game’s competitive ecosystem. Without warning, the developers switched all player profiles to private by default. Suddenly, the public data stream went dark.

The Sudden Blank Slate

For years, third-party sites like Fortnite Tracker have acted as the backbone of the community. They compiled win rates, kill-death ratios, and tournament performance into clean, searchable profiles. Anyone could type in a username and see exactly how formidable an opponent was. Now, those search queries often lead to dead ends.

Under the new system, players must manually dig into their account settings, navigate to gameplay privacy, and opt-in to share their career stats. Most casual players will never do this. Many competitive players do not even know they need to. The result is a massive, hollowed-out database where millions of active accounts have simply vanished from public record.

Scouting in the Dark

The competitive Fortnite scene runs on data. Unlike professional leagues with multi-million-dollar scouting departments, Fortnite’s grassroots esport relies on independent coaches, tier-two organizations, and players looking for teammates. They use these trackers to verify claims, check recent form, and identify rising stars.

With profiles hidden, that scouting pipeline has stalled. Tryouts are now based on word-of-mouth or easily manipulated self-reporting. Tournament organizers are also feeling the squeeze. Verifying that a participant is playing on their actual main account rather than a smurf has become a painstaking manual process of asking players for screenshots of their settings menu.

Toxicity Versus Transparency

Epic Games did not make this change to hurt the competitive scene. The move is a clear attempt to curb in-game toxicity. For years, casual players have complained about stat-shaming. Sweaty lobby hosts would routinely look up teammates’ stats and kick anyone who did not meet a strict, self-imposed threshold of wins or K/D ratios. By hiding these metrics by default, Epic has successfully protected casual players from this brand of gatekeeping.

Yet, the execution has left the upper echelons of the community feeling abandoned. Many argue that Epic could have easily exempted players who participate in ranked modes or official tournaments from the blanket privacy rule. Instead, the developers opted for a one-size-fits-all solution that treats casual weekend warriors and aspiring pros exactly the same.

Adapting to the New Reality

The team behind Fortnite Tracker is already scrambling to adapt. They are placing prominent banners on their site, begging players to log into Fortnite and toggle their settings back to public. They have even launched community guides explaining the exact steps required to restore tracking. It is an uphill battle, as convincing millions of players to change a menu setting is incredibly difficult.

For now, the competitive scene will have to adjust to a less transparent era. Aspiring pros who want to be noticed must make a conscious effort to broadcast their data. If they leave their profile on the default settings, they risk becoming completely invisible to the organizations that could offer them a career.
