Hawkins Bleeds Into the Battle Royale Island

Halloween is always a massive event in Fortnite. This year, though, Epic Games is taking things to a entirely different level. Fortnitemares 2026 officially kicked off this morning, and it brings the dark, decaying world of Hawkins directly to the battle royale island. It is a massive, multi-week crossover with Netflix’s Stranger Things designed to tie into the show’s highly anticipated final season. The update is live right now, and the map changes are staggering.

If you drop into a match today, you will immediately notice a giant, bleeding tear in the sky right over the center of the island. Underneath it lies the new Point of Interest: The Upside Down. This isn’t just a cosmetic makeover. Epic has created a fully interactive dual-dimension zone. Players can step through pulsating physical rifts scattered around the ruined remnants of the Creel House.

Surviving the Creep of the Upside Down

Once you step inside the Upside Down, the entire game shifts. The sky turns a violent, stormy red. Ash floats through the air. Gravity drops slightly, allowing for higher jumps, but your shield slowly drains unless you stay near glowing blue spores. It is a high-risk, high-reward area filled with top-tier loot, but you won’t be alone down there.

To make the Upside Down truly terrifying, Epic has implemented a new sound mechanic. Inside this dark dimension, running or building creates visual sound waves that travel much further than they do on the normal map. This instantly alerts nearby monsters—and other players—to your exact position. It forces a slower, stealthier playstyle that perfectly mimics the tension of the television show.

Play as the Mastermind of the Void

The undisputed star of the update is Vecna. The show’s ultimate villain has officially joined the Fortnite roster. The Vecna Outfit is available in the Item Shop for 2,000 V-Bucks, complete with a terrifyingly detailed fleshy texture that looks pulled straight from the screen. It also features a built-in emote called “Vecna’s Curse,” which suspends the player in mid-air surrounded by cracking bones and grandfather clock sounds.

For those who want a cleaner look, the bundle includes a reactive style that transforms him into Henry Creel, his human form. This skin slowly decays into Vecna as you rack up eliminations during a match. Other fan-favorite characters are getting major updates too. A new battle-damaged version of Jim Hopper and an older, final-season variant of Eleven have also hit the shop.

Unlocking Telekinetic Powers

The collaboration also introduces brand-new gameplay mechanics that shake up the current combat sandbox. Eleven’s Telekinetic Powers are available as a Mythic weapon. Finding this item allows players to levitate objects, hurl cars at opponents, and deflect incoming bullets for a brief period.

But you aren’t just fighting other players. Packs of hostile Demodogs and lumbering Demogorgons now roam the corrupted areas of the map. Eliminating them yields rare weapons and healing items, but their shrieks will quickly draw attention.

Players can also earn free rewards by completing the “Hawkins Memorial” questline. These challenges award a Demobat glider and a grandfather clock back bling that chimes ominously every time the storm circle shrinks. For hardcore fans, the shop also features Dustin’s thinking cap as a back bling and a reactive weapon wrap that oozes black vines.

An Authentic Final Stand

Epic Games described the crossover as one of their most ambitious seasonal events yet. Developers worked closely with the Netflix creative team to ensure that the atmosphere of Hawkins’ final stand feels authentic inside the game engine. The community has already reacted with overwhelming excitement. Social media is currently flooded with clips of players using Vecna’s curse emote in the middle of intense build fights. Fortnitemares 2026 is scheduled to run until November 3rd, giving players plenty of time to explore the rifts and escape the Upside Down.
