MIAMI — A federal judge has temporarily halted an order requiring Donald Trump to hand over detailed financial documents to the BBC as part of his ongoing multi-billion dollar defamation lawsuit against the British broadcaster.
U.S. District Judge Roy Altman granted the temporary pause while the court considers a request from Trump’s legal team to amend and narrow the scope of the lawsuit.

The high-profile lawsuit stems from a BBC documentary examining the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot. Trump filed the complaint in Miami, accusing the network of maliciously editing clips from his speech to create the impression that he incited the crowd. While the BBC later issued an apology regarding an error in editorial judgment over the segment, the broadcaster has contested the defamation claims and challenged the legal basis of the suit.
Initially, Trump’s legal filing sought a massive $10 billion in damages, arguing that the broadcast caused severe economic harm to his brand, properties, and business enterprises.
The Dispute Over Financial Records
Previously, a federal magistrate judge ruled that because Trump placed his commercial empire and brand value at the center of his economic damages claim, the BBC was entitled to review relevant financial files tied to his business network and the Trump family trust.
