Fortnite Meets Stephen King’s IT in Terrifying Fortnitemares 2026
Epic Games unveils Fortnitemares 2026, bringing Stephen King’s ‘IT’ to the island alongside terrifying new survival-horror tools for UEFN creators.
The rumors were true. Derry is coming to the Island.
Epic Games has officially pulled back the curtain on Fortnitemares 2026, and it is shaping up to be the most terrifying iteration of the annual Halloween event to date. For months, dataminers and horror fans have traded whispers about a potential crossover with Stephen King’s legendary masterpiece, IT. Today, those whispers became reality. Pennywise the Dancing Clown is officially joining the roster, bringing his signature red balloons and nightmare-inducing presence to the world of Fortnite.
We All Float on the Island
The collaboration is much more than just a simple character skin. According to Epic, the event will completely transform portions of the Battle Royale map. Players can expect to find eerie red balloons hovering over sewer grates scattered across the island. Getting too close might trigger familiar, chilling audio cues that will make even the most seasoned players hesitate. The Pennywise outfit itself comes with two distinct styles: the classic 1990 miniseries look portrayed by Tim Curry, and the modern, crackle-skinned version played by Bill Skarsgård.
Naturally, the cosmetics do not stop there. A Georgie-inspired yellow raincoat back bling, a sewer grate harvesting tool, and an emote that features Pennywise performing his unsettling, jerky dance are all slated to hit the Item Shop when the event goes live. Epic has also teased a special limited-time questline where players must hunt down missing children’s toys across the map to unlock free Halloween-themed rewards.
Players who dare to explore the sewers of the central POI will find themselves navigating a labyrinth of wet stone and echoes. Rumor has it that a giant, spider-like silhouette can occasionally be seen lurking just beyond the reach of player flashlights. This marks one of the first times Epic has integrated environmental storytelling of this scale directly into the core battle royale mode, shifting the tone of the game from colorful chaos to genuine suspense.
A Massive Leap for UEFN Horror Creators
While the IT crossover is the headline grabber for casual players, the real revolution is happening under the hood of the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Epic is using Fortnitemares 2026 to launch a suite of highly anticipated survival-horror mechanics that will permanently change what creators can build inside the ecosystem.

Chief among these updates is the official integration of a native, highly polished first-person camera perspective. While creators have hacked together first-person modes in the past, this new toolset offers seamless movement, weapon aiming, and environmental interactions. Alongside the perspective shift, Epic is introducing several new tools:
- Dynamic Sanity Meters: Creators can now program systems where a player’s vision distorts, audio hallucinations trigger, or screen shake intensifies the longer they remain in dark areas or near monsters.
- Advanced Ray-Traced Fog: A new volumetric lighting system that allows creators to build thick, suffocating mist that realistically reacts to flashlights.
- Proximity Audio Enhancements: Directional, muffled soundscapes that simulate hiding in closets or hearing footsteps through solid wooden floors.
These tools aim to position UEFN as a genuine competitor to standalone horror engines, allowing small teams to build experiences that rival indie hits like Phasmophobia or Dead by Daylight directly inside Fortnite.
‘A New Era of Scary’
‘We wanted to give creators the exact same tools that AAA horror studios use to build tension,’ said Saxs Persson, Executive Vice President of the Fortnite Ecosystem at Epic Games. ‘Fortnitemares has always been about fun, spooky vibes. But with these new UEFN mechanics, we are enabling our community to make games that are genuinely, deeply unsettling.’
Epic plans to showcase these new capabilities with a series of developer-made horror maps, including a recreation of Derry’s infamous house on Neibolt Street. Players will be able to queue into these experiences directly from the Discover tab, offering a completely different pacing from the traditional fast-paced shooting of Battle Royale.
When Does Fortnitemares 2026 Begin?
The event is scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following a brief period of server downtime. The spooky festivities and the IT collaboration cosmetics will remain active through November 3, giving players plenty of time to face their fears, complete their challenges, and explore the terrifying new worlds built by the community.
Whether you are looking to terrorize your lobby as Pennywise or build the next great psychological thriller in UEFN, this year’s Fortnitemares is shaping up to be an unforgettable ride. Just remember to watch the drains.
