Fortnitemares 2026 Adds Blumhouse Psychological Horror Campaign

Epic Games is partnering with Blumhouse for Fortnitemares 2026, launching a groundbreaking psychological horror campaign built entirely in UEFN.

Fortnite is about to get genuinely terrifying. For years, the game’s annual Halloween event, Fortnitemares, has leaned into a cozy, cartoonish brand of spooky. Players hunted glowing Husks, rode witch brooms, and dodged pumpkin launchers. It was fun, lighthearted, and family-friendly. This year, Epic Games is tossing that playful playbook aside.

For Fortnitemares 2026, the developer is charting a dark, unfamiliar path. Epic has partnered with Blumhouse Games—the interactive arm of the legendary horror studio behind modern classics like Get Out and Five Nights at Freddy’s—to deliver a franchise-first psychological horror campaign. Built entirely within Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), the new mode represents a massive shift in what the platform can do.

A Shift in Tone for Fortnitemares

This is not the usual Fortnite experience. The collaboration aims to push the boundaries of what players expect from the game’s ecosystem, trading high-energy battle royale antics for slow-burn tension.

Saxs Persson, Epic’s Executive Vice President, noted that the project represents a major milestone for their creative tools. “We have spent years building tools that allow creators to make anything they can dream up,” Persson said. “By working with the masters of modern horror at Blumhouse, we wanted to show that Fortnite isn’t just a place for colorful battle royales. It is a legitimate engine for deep, narrative-driven psychological art.”

The result of this collaboration is a standalone story mode titled The Whispers of Birchwood. Players won’t find any assault rifles, shield potions, or tactical shotguns here. Instead, they will step into the shoes of an investigator searching a dilapidated, shifting house in the middle of a dense, fog-covered forest. No guns. No building. Just a flashlight and your wits.

How Blumhouse Is Changing the Game

According to Zach Wood, President of Blumhouse Games, the goal was to craft an experience that plays with the user’s mind rather than just startling them with loud noises. “We didn’t want to just rely on sudden jump scares,” Wood explained. “True horror is about tension. It’s about what you think is behind the door, the subtle creak of a floorboard, the way shadows seem to move when you turn your back. UEFN gave us the tools to manipulate the environment in real time based on how the player behaves.”

To achieve this, the campaign locks players into a tight, claustrophobic first-person perspective. The lighting is hyper-realistic, casting long, menacing shadows across peeling wallpaper and rusted pipes. Sound plays an even bigger role. Epic has integrated advanced binaural audio, meaning every whisper, footstep, and distant door slam will sound exactly like it is happening right behind you. If you hear a scratching sound on your left, you will want to look—but the developers warn that looking isn’t always the safest choice.

Pushing UEFN to Its Limits

For independent developers using UEFN, this project serves as a massive proof of concept. Up until now, many associated Fortnite’s creative tools with simple deathmatches, prop hunts, or obstacle courses. By showcasing a high-end, studio-backed psychological horror game running natively inside Fortnite, Epic is laying down a marker. They want serious game developers to see UEFN as a viable alternative to traditional standalone engines. If The Whispers of Birchwood succeeds, it could open the floodgates for more prestige, narrative-heavy collaborations in the future.

Release Date and Exclusive Rewards

For the Fortnite community, this is a radical departure. Some players might find the sudden pivot to genuine horror jarring, but Epic believes the community is ready for more mature experiences. Over the past year, the company has actively pushed to diversify the types of games available inside its ecosystem, and this campaign is the crown jewel of that effort.

If you manage to survive the psychological gauntlet, Epic has promised exclusive cosmetic rewards that carry over to the Battle Royale mode. These include a haunting, reactive outfit that shifts appearance based on your in-game fear level, and a specialized back bling. The Whispers of Birchwood will launch alongside the rest of the Fortnitemares 2026 update on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The campaign will be entirely free for all Fortnite players.
