Fortnite Servers Down: Matchmaking Paused for Fortnitemares 2026
Fortnite matchmaking is disabled and servers are offline as Epic Games rolls out the massive Fortnitemares 2026 update. Here is what to expect.
Matchmaking Paused Ahead of Major Update
If you tried loading into a Fortnite match early this morning, you probably ran into a brick wall. Epic Games officially disabled matchmaking at 3:30 AM ET today. Shortly after, at 4:00 AM ET, the servers went completely dark.
This isn’t a random glitch. It is the scheduled downtime for the highly anticipated v33.00 patch, better known to the community as the Fortnitemares 2026 update.
What to Expect from Fortnitemares 2026
Every October, Epic Games transforms its colorful battle royale island into a spooky, fog-filled hunting ground. This year is no different, though the developers are promising some of the biggest changes yet. According to the official @FortniteStatus account on X, players should prepare for a longer wait than usual.
“Please note that patch sizes will be larger than normal on all platforms,” Epic posted late last night. The team also advised players to double-check their storage space before initiating the download.
Right now, Epic’s engineers are busy replacing the current game files on their servers with the new Halloween-themed assets. It is a massive undertaking. The map is getting a creepy facelift, complete with haunted points of interest and eerie weather effects.
Leaked Weapons and New Skins
Leakers and data miners have already spent the last few days teasing what is to come. If the rumors hold up, we are looking at the return of fan-favorite weapons. The Pumpkin Launcher is almost guaranteed to make a comeback, alongside Witch Brooms for fast travel. There are also whispers of a new vampire boss lurking in a freshly spawned castle on the western side of the island.

Skins are another massive draw. While Epic keeps the official lineup under wraps until the servers go live, collaborations with iconic horror franchises are basically a tradition at this point. In the past, we saw Michael Myers, Jack Skellington, and Resident Evil characters join the battle. This year, fans are betting on a few modern horror villains making their debut in the Item Shop.
Downtime and Queue Expectations
Normally, Fortnite downtime lasts between two to three hours. However, because of the sheer scale of the Fortnitemares update, things could take a bit longer. If everything goes off without a hitch, players can expect the servers to wake back up around 7:00 AM ET (4:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM BST).
But seasoned players know to keep their expectations in check. When massive seasonal updates launch, millions of players rush to log in at the exact same moment. This usually triggers long queue times, and sometimes, temporary server crashes. If you manage to download the patch the second it drops, you might still have to wait in a virtual line before you can jump out of the Battle Bus.
Creative and Save the World Updates
It is not just the main Battle Royale mode getting a makeover either. Fortnite Creative is expected to receive a massive batch of spooky props, scary ambient lighting settings, and new templates for creators to build their own haunted houses. Save the World players will also likely see the return of the Hexsylvania venture zone, offering fresh rewards for those who prefer fighting monsters with friends rather than battling other players.
For competitive players, the downtime brings a temporary pause to ranked matchmaking. Epic usually resets or tweaks certain gameplay mechanics during these major mid-season updates. If you were close to hitting the next rank, you will have to wait until the spooky fog clears to resume your climb.
While you wait, it is a good idea to set your console or PC to auto-update. PlayStation and Xbox users can put their systems into rest mode to let the download run in the background. PC players should keep the Epic Games Launcher open to catch the file as soon as it hits the servers.
