Epic Games confirms extended Fortnite server downtime on October 3, 2026. Here is when matchmaking goes offline and what to expect from Fortnitemares.

A Long Night Ahead for Fortnite Fans

Fortnite players need to find something else to do this Thursday. Epic Games just confirmed that the game’s servers will go dark on October 3, 2026. It is all part of the preparation for Fortnitemares, the massive annual Halloween event. If you are planning a late-night gaming session, you will want to wrap up your matches early. You do not want to get booted right before a Victory Royale.

Epic shared the schedule through its official Fortnite Status channels. As usual, matchmaking services will be turned off first. This happens about half an hour before the actual maintenance starts. It prevents players from getting stuck in dying lobbies when the plug is pulled. If everything goes according to schedule, matchmaking will stop around 1:30 AM ET. The full downtime kicks off officially at 2:00 AM ET, which is 6:00 AM UTC.

Why This Downtime Will Take Longer

This is not your average weekly patch. Epic warned that this update will require an extended maintenance window. Big seasonal updates like Fortnitemares bring massive files. They restructure parts of the game code, tweak map layouts, and inject dozens of new cosmetic items all at once. Usually, Fortnite downtime lasts between two and four hours. For this one, players might have to wait a bit longer before they can jump back onto the island. It is safe to expect at least four to five hours of offline time. That means the game should be playable again around breakfast time on the East Coast of the US.

What makes this update so heavy? It is the sheer volume of assets. Epic has to load spooky map changes, update the physics engine for seasonal items, and pre-load all the shop content for the rest of the month. Doing all of this at once takes time. The server-side databases need to be updated and tested before millions of players try to log in at the same time.

What to Expect from Fortnitemares 2026

Fortnitemares has become a staple of the battle royale’s yearly calendar. It is when the island gets its spookiest makeover. While Epic keeps the exact patch notes under wraps until the servers are back up, data miners and teasers have given fans plenty to talk about. Rumors point to a haunted redesign of several major points of interest. Fog is likely to roll in, obscuring visibility and completely changing how mid-game rotations work.

We will also see the return of classic Halloween weapons. The Wood Stake Shotgun and the Pumpkin Launcher are almost guaranteed to make a comeback. Players are also hoping to see the Witch Broom return as a quick mobility option. These seasonal items completely disrupt the current competitive meta, making the gameplay chaotic and fun for casual players and pros alike.

Then there are the skins. Fortnitemares is famous for its massive pop-culture crossovers. In past years, we saw characters from classic horror franchises and modern thrillers join the item shop. This year, leaks suggest Epic is collaborating with some major movie studios to bring iconic villains to the game. Expect some highly detailed Halloween-themed original outfits in the new Battle Pass or the shop rotation.

How to Prepare for the Patch

What should you do while the game is offline? First, do not try to force-launch the game once the download becomes available. Epic usually releases the patch files to consoles and PC about an hour into the downtime. You can start downloading the update early, but you still won’t be able to log in until Epic gives the green light. Keep an eye on social media channels for the official “all clear” signal.

Keep in mind that server queues can be incredibly long right after the game comes back online. Everyone will try to log in at the same time. If you want to play early, make sure your console or PC is set to auto-update. That way, the massive patch downloads in the background while you sleep, and you can jump straight into the queue the moment the servers breathe back to life.
