Fortnite Shop Crashes After Kingdom Hearts Sora and Riku Release

Epic Games servers struggled to cope as Disney’s Kingdom Hearts crossover skins, Sora and Riku, finally debuted in the Fortnite Item Shop.

It finally happened. But the servers weren’t ready.

On Thursday night, Epic Games pulled off one of the biggest surprises in Fortnite history. Without any prior announcement, the long-rumored Kingdom Hearts crossover skins dropped into the Item Shop. Fans of the Square Enix and Disney franchise had waited years for this moment. They instantly flooded the game to grab Sora and Riku.

The sheer volume of players trying to buy the cosmetics at the exact same time was too much for the system to handle. Within minutes of the shop’s 8:00 PM Eastern reset, players began reporting severe lag, frozen purchase screens, and outright errors.

“We are currently investigating issues regarding Item Shop purchases and slow loading times,” Epic Games posted via its official @FortniteStatus account on X just fifteen minutes after the drop. “Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this.”

For many, the patience was wearing thin. Players who had loaded up on V-Bucks beforehand found themselves stuck on infinite loading wheels. Some received error messages stating that their purchase could not be completed, though their V-Bucks had already been deducted. Others couldn’t even log into the game. It was a digital traffic jam of epic proportions.

The Cost of Keyblades

The Kingdom Hearts collection includes two main character skins. Sora, the spiky-haired protagonist, comes with his iconic Kingdom Key pickaxe and a built-in “Trinity Limit” emote. He is priced at 2,000 V-Bucks. Riku, his rival and best friend, is available for 1,800 V-Bucks, complete with the Way to the Dawn sword.

For those looking to grab everything, Epic offered a “Destiny Islands Bundle” for 3,200 V-Bucks. This package includes both characters, their respective pickaxes, a Gummi Ship glider, and a loading screen featuring custom artwork.

“I clicked buy on the bundle, and my game just locked up,” said one player on Reddit. “I restarted, and my V-Bucks were gone, but the skins weren’t in my locker. I was panicking.” Epic has assured players that any missing purchases will be credited to their accounts once the database catches up. The company urged players not to spam the purchase button, as this only worsened the queue times.

A Deal Years in the Making

A Kingdom Hearts crossover has sat at the top of player wishlists for over half a decade. Rumors have circulated since Fortnite’s early days. However, the complex licensing agreement between Disney and Square Enix always seemed like an insurmountable hurdle. Kingdom Hearts has always been notoriously difficult to license out to third parties due to its dual ownership.

That changed earlier this year. In February, Disney announced a massive $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games. The goal was to build a brand-new expansive universe inside Fortnite. Since then, the floodgates have opened. Players have seen villains like Maleficent and heroes from The Incredibles join the roster. Still, Kingdom Hearts remained the holy grail for a specific generation of gamers.

The surprise drop caught the community entirely off guard. Typically, prominent Fortnite data miners leak collaborative skins days or even weeks in advance. Epic managed to keep this update hidden in encrypted files, preventing any early leaks from spoiling the moment. It was a rare feat in today’s internet age, making the sudden rush on the servers even more intense.

“It’s easily the most requested collab we’ve ever seen,” said popular Fortnite content creator SypherPK during a live stream. “People didn’t think it was possible because of Square Enix, but here we are. It literally broke the shop.”

What Happens Next?

By midnight, Epic Games had deployed a series of backend fixes. Server stability began to return to normal, and the Item Shop started processing transactions without the lengthy delays. The queue times slowly dissipated, allowing players to finally equip their new gear.

If you are still experiencing issues, Epic recommends restarting your game client. If your V-Bucks were deducted but you haven’t received your Sora or Riku skins, do not attempt to buy the bundle again. The transaction should finalize automatically as the servers clear the backlog.

The Kingdom Hearts cosmetic set is expected to remain in the shop rotation for at least a week, giving eager players plenty of time to secure their favorite keyblade masters once the dust fully settles.
