Fortnite Launches Disney Universe Public Beta With Marvel & Star Wars
Epic Games has launched the open beta for its massive Disney Universe inside Fortnite, featuring interactive Marvel and Star Wars social hubs.
A New Digital Playground
Epic Games just dropped its highly anticipated ‘Disney Universe’ open beta inside Fortnite. This marks the first major playable milestone of the massive virtual space the two giants have been building together. Launching just in time for the holiday season, this persistent digital world lets players explore dedicated, highly interactive zones themed around Disney’s biggest franchises, starting with Star Wars and Marvel.
It is a massive moment for Fortnite. The game has long outgrown its battle royale roots, but this new addition shifts the platform into a different gear entirely. Players can now jump into dedicated social hubs, hang out with friends, play themed minigames, and buy exclusive virtual gear.
Inside the Hubs: Star Wars and Marvel
The beta features two distinct flagship zones. In the Star Wars hub, players find themselves in a dusty outpost that feels straight out of Tatooine. There is a fully functional Mos Eisley Cantina where players can listen to alien bands, trade scrap metal for cosmetic emotes, and even pilot virtual Landspeeders through timed trial runs.
On the other side of the portal lies the Marvel social hub. Designed around a sprawling, futuristic plaza beneath Avengers Tower, this area offers a different vibe. Here, players can visit Tony Stark’s workshop to customize holographic armor displays or participate in gravity-defying parkour challenges across the city skyline.
‘We wanted to build something that goes beyond simple virtual storefronts,’ said Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, in an official statement. ‘This is about bringing people together in a shared space where they can live inside these stories, not just watch them.’
The $1.5 Billion Partnership Realized
This launch is the first tangible fruit of Disney’s massive $1.5 billion equity stake in Epic Games, which was announced in early 2024. At the time, Disney CEO Bob Iger called the move the company’s ‘largest entry ever into the games world.’

For years, Disney and Epic have collaborated on one-off events. We have seen Marvel villains take over the Fortnite map and Star Wars lightsabers drop from the sky during movie promotions. But those were temporary. This new universe is permanent. It lives alongside Fortnite’s existing modes like Rocket Racing, LEGO Fortnite, and Fortnite Festival.
The infrastructure behind the project leverages Unreal Engine 5. It allows players to seamlessly carry their purchased Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars skins directly into these new zones. The transition is smooth. You can walk into the Avengers plaza dressed as Darth Vader, buy a virtual Mickey Mouse ear hat, and immediately jump into a battle royale match without changing your character.
It is a direct challenge to platforms like Roblox, which have dominated the virtual hangout space for younger audiences. By combining Fortnite’s refined combat and movement mechanics with Disney’s unrivaled roster of characters, Epic is making a serious play for the ultimate virtual hangout crown.
What is Next for the Beta?
Epic Games has made it clear that this is just the beginning. The current beta is designed to test server loads and gather player feedback over the busy holiday season. Epic plans to roll out regular updates throughout the winter. The economy is also getting a test run; players can complete quests to earn exclusive badges or spend their V-Bucks on unique cosmetic items.
Rumors are already circulating about what comes next. Industry insiders hint that classic Disney Animation and Pixar hubs are already in development. Areas themed around Toy Story and The Nightmare Before Christmas are expected early next year.
For now, the beta is free to access for all Fortnite players on PC, consoles, and mobile devices. Players simply need to search for the ‘Disney Universe’ destination tile in the main menu or use the official island code provided by Epic.
