Fortnite Launches Disney Chronicles in Massive Metaverse Move
Epic Games officially rolls out Disney Chronicles, a massive and permanent new world inside Fortnite featuring Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.
The battle bus has a new, permanent destination. Epic Games officially went live today with "Disney Chronicles," a massive virtual world nested directly inside Fortnite. It is the biggest expansion in the platform’s history. The launch represents the first major fruit of Disney’s eye-watering $1.5 billion investment in Epic, which was announced earlier this year.
A Permanent Digital Playground
This is not another limited-time promotional event. It is not just a batch of expensive character skins. Disney Chronicles is a persistent, living world. It exists right next to Fortnite’s other major pillars like Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, and Rocket Racing. Players can jump in, build, explore, and hang out in expansive spaces dedicated to Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and classic Disney animation.
"Our goal has always been to build an open ecosystem where players can transition seamlessly between different worlds," Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said in a statement. "Disney Chronicles is the realization of that vision on an unprecedented scale."
For Disney, the move is about meeting younger audiences where they already spend their time. The media giant wants to weave its iconic stories into the daily digital habits of millions. Disney CEO Bob Iger called the project a multi-year initiative that will grow continuously over the next decade.

Inside the Chronicles
So, what can players actually do in this new space? The world is divided into distinct thematic districts, each offering unique gameplay loops. The experience is designed to be highly interactive, going far beyond simple sightseeing.
- The Stark Industries Campus: Located in the Marvel zone, players can collaborate to build high-tech weapons, run obstacle courses, or defend the facility against waves of AI-controlled enemies.
- The Outer Rim Outpost: A gritty Star Wars sector where players can trade scrap metal, customize their own astromech droids, and pilot starfighters in flight simulations.
- The Pixar Neighborhood: A creative, peaceful zone focused on social play, customizable virtual homes, and physics-based puzzles inspired by Toy Story and Monsters, Inc.
The persistent nature of the world means community actions have consequences. If players work together to rebuild a damaged plaza in the Pixar district, that plaza stays rebuilt. Epic plans to update the environment weekly, syncing virtual in-game events with real-world theatrical releases and new streaming debuts on Disney+.
The Business of the Virtual World
This launch is a massive shift in how intellectual property is used in gaming. Usually, entertainment companies license their characters for isolated, single-use games. Here, the boundaries are completely blurred. A player wearing an Iron Man suit can build a virtual log cabin in a cozy neighborhood inspired by Up, then invite a friend dressed as a Stormtrooper over to play a round of mini-golf.
While Disney Chronicles is free to enter, it features a heavy emphasis on digital commerce. Players can purchase exclusive virtual merchandise, customized furniture for their in-game apartments, and special emotes. Critics might call it an elaborate, highly interactive toy store. But for the generation of players who use Fortnite as their primary social network, it is simply the new place to hang out with friends after school.
The launch comes at a critical moment for Epic Games. The company has spent years arguing that Fortnite is an operating system for virtual worlds rather than a simple shooter. By integrating Disney’s powerhouse lineup of franchises into a permanent, interconnected space, Epic is making its strongest case yet that the metaverse is very much alive. It just needed the right worlds to connect.
