Epic Games quietly blocked real-time matchmaking data in Fortnite Chapter 7, leaving popular stat-tracking sites in the dark and competitive players angry.

Epic Games Sparks Backlash After Restricting Fortnite Tracker API

Fortnite Chapter 7 is finally here. It brought new weapons, a fresh map, and plenty of excitement. But behind the scenes, a major shift has left a massive portion of the community furious.

Epic Games quietly updated its public API alongside the new chapter launch. This update cuts off the real-time matchmaking data that third-party platforms rely on. The hardest-hit victim is Fortnite Tracker, the go-to website run by Tracker Network that millions of players use to monitor their stats.

The End of Real-Time Stats

For years, checking your stats was a post-game ritual. Did you win? How many kills did you get? What is your current rank? Fortnite Tracker gave players instant answers. It also let gamers peek at their opponents’ skill levels. If you died to a suspicious player, you could quickly search their name to see if they were a seasoned pro or a brand-new account.

Now, that instant access is gone.

The API changes mean third-party apps can no longer fetch live matchmaking information as games happen. Tracker Network confirmed the disruption, noting that certain features are now severely limited or completely broken. While basic career stats might still update eventually, the live, lobby-by-lobby breakdowns are history.

Why the Community Is Furious

The backlash from the community was almost instant. Competitive players are particularly angry because data is everything to them. They use real-time tracking to analyze scrimmages, study tournament lobbies, and measure their progress against rivals. Without live API access, tracking tournament trends becomes incredibly difficult.

Casual players are frustrated too. Many enjoyed keeping a second screen open to watch their daily win streaks climb. Now, they are met with delayed updates or blank screens.

Why Did Epic Block the Data?

The developer has not released an official, detailed statement regarding the API lockdown. However, industry insiders suggest a few likely reasons:

  • Player Privacy: Epic has steadily pushed for more privacy controls. By default, Fortnite accounts now have public stats turned off. Restricting the API prevents third-party sites from scraping data from players who prefer to keep their gaming history private.
  • Preventing Toxicity: Stream snipers often use real-time trackers to target popular creators. By looking up a streamer’s live lobby data, griefers can queue up at the exact same time. Blocking live matchmaking data makes this much harder to pull off.
  • Server Load: Serving real-time data for millions of active matches places a massive load on Epic’s servers. Cutting off third-party scrapers frees up valuable bandwidth.

A Rising Industry Trend

Epic is not the first publisher to pull back on public data sharing. Over the last few years, major studios have tightened their data pipelines. Activision Blizzard and Bungie have both modified their APIs in the past to protect player data and curb third-party monetization of game statistics. In many ways, Epic is simply catching up to industry standards, even if it feels like a step backward for the community.

Tracker Network has stated they are looking into workarounds, but their options are limited. If Epic keeps the API locked down, the era of instant, detailed Fortnite stat-tracking may be over for good. For now, players will have to rely on Fortnite’s basic in-game career tab.
