Epic Games Reveals Fortnitemares 2026: Beetlejuice & Shadow Realm
Epic Games unveils Fortnitemares 2026, featuring a Beetlejuice crossover, the creepy new Shadow Realm mechanic, and returning Halloween classics.
It’s that time of year again. Fortnite is about to get a whole lot creepier. Epic Games has finally pulled back the curtain on Fortnitemares 2026, and this year’s Halloween update is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious in the battle royale's history. Rumors have circulated in the community for months, but now it’s official: the ghost with the most is coming to the island. A massive crossover with the classic Beetlejuice franchise is leading the charge, alongside a wild new map mechanic called the Shadow Realm.
The spooky festivities are scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following a brief period of server downtime. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming nightmare.
Say His Name Three Times
Fans have dropped hints and dug through leaked game files since early summer, but the official confirmation still hit like a ton of bricks. The headline act of the event is the arrival of Beetlejuice himself. Players will be able to purchase the iconic bio-exorcist in his classic black-and-white striped suit directly from the Item Shop. But Epic didn't stop there.
The crossover features a whole suite of cosmetics. Lydia Deetz is getting her own skin, complete with her signature dark goth aesthetic. There is also a Shrunken Head back bling that reacts to your eliminations, and a massive Sandworm glider that looks genuinely terrifying as it swoops down from the battle bus.
On the battlefield, players can hunt down a new mythic weapon called the Neitherworld Summoner. This bizarre artifact allows you to summon decaying, skeletal hands from beneath the earth. These hands grab opposing players, keeping them pinned in place for a few crucial seconds while you line up your shot. It is a chaotic addition to the sandbox, perfectly fitting the tone of the Tim Burton films.
Entering the Shadow Realm
While the Beetlejuice skins will certainly turn heads, the biggest shift in gameplay comes from the new Shadow Realm mechanic. This isn't just a spooky coat of paint on the existing island. Epic has built a literal parallel dimension that exists simultaneously with the main map.

During a match, unstable rifts will tear open across the island. Stepping into one instantly transports you to the Shadow Realm. The sky box shifts to an eerie, churning purple, and gravity behaves differently. You can jump much higher and survive falls that would normally send you back to the lobby. However, you aren't alone down there.
The Shadow Realm is crawling with aggressive AI monsters known as Shadow Fiends. Defeating them is tough, but they drop top-tier legendary loot. The catch? You can’t directly hurt players who are still in the normal world, though you can see their faint, ghostly outlines walking around. This creates a fascinating tactical dilemma. Do you escape to the Shadow Realm to heal up and farm powerful weapons, or do you stay in the physical world and gatekeep the rifts where enemies might suddenly reappear?
Death is Just the Beginning
In a twist that will surely shake up casual play, Epic is also debuting a special limited-time mode called "Dead but Not Gone." In this mode, getting eliminated doesn't mean your match is over. Instead of heading back to the lobby, you respawn in the Shadow Realm as a phantom.
As a ghost, you can't fire traditional weapons, but you can still mess with the living. Phantoms can haunt survivors, possess nearby vehicles to drive them off cliffs, or throw ghostly debris to disorient enemies during intense firefights. The team that survives the physical world wins, but they will have to fight off both living players and an army of invisible, annoying ghosts to do so.
Familiar Spooks Return
Beyond the new features, Epic is bringing back several classic Fortnitemares elements to keep veteran players happy. Here is what you can expect to see back in the active loot pool:
- The Pumpkin Launcher: The fan-favorite explosive weapon is back, complete with its creepy laughing audio effect.
- Witch Brooms: This high-mobility item lets you quickly escape tight situations and glide across the terrain.
- Candy Consumables: Scattered across the map, these small treats give quick boosts to speed, health, or shields.
The update will require a larger-than-usual download, likely because the game has to render two maps at once. Epic recommends checking your hard drive space before the Tuesday morning update rolls out. Get ready, drop in, and whatever you do, don't say his name.
