Disney Villains Invade Fortnite for Fortnitemares 2026

Epic Games joins forces with Disney for a massive Fortnitemares 2026 expansion built in UEFN, featuring playable villains and custom raid-style boss fights.

A Dark New Playground

Epic Games is taking its annual Halloween event to a surprisingly dark place this year. For Fortnitemares 2026, the battle royale giant is partnering with Disney to launch a massive, fully playable expansion dedicated entirely to some of the entertainment giant’s most famous antagonists.

This isn’t just another batch of paid character skins in the item shop. Built entirely within Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), the upcoming crossover represents the most ambitious collaboration between the two companies since Disney acquired a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games back in early 2024.

The Reign of Shadows

The expansion, titled Fortnitemares: Reign of Shadows, introduces a sprawling new map featuring distinct territories ruled by classic Disney villains. Players can explore the gothic, thorn-choked castle of Maleficent, navigate a foggy Victorian London harbor controlled by Captain Hook, and descend into a neon-drenched underworld run by Hades.

Each zone functions as a self-contained raid-style adventure. Instead of standard battle royale rules, players can team up in squads of four to tackle environment-based puzzles, fight waves of custom-designed henchmen, and eventually face off against the villains themselves in multi-stage boss fights. Defeating Maleficent, for instance, requires players to dodge her iconic dragon form while utilizing special light-based weapons scattered across the arena.

“We wanted to do more than just drop these characters onto the battle royale island,” said Saxs Persson, Executive Vice President of Epic’s Ecosystem Product Group. “By building this experience from the ground up in UEFN, we’ve created a completely unique gameplay loop. It feels like a standalone Disney action game, but it lives entirely inside the Fortnite launcher.”

Pushing UEFN to the Limit

The level of detail showcases the rapid evolution of Epic’s creator tools. The expansion boasts custom-rendered cutscenes, unique voice acting, and atmospheric lighting that sets a much grimier, more cinematic tone than Fortnite’s typical colorful aesthetic. Players will even be able to earn exclusive in-game items, including a rideable skeletal carriage glider and unique weapon wraps, by completing specific challenges within the Disney zones.

Get Know Instant Access

Naturally, the item shop will also see a massive influx of Disney-themed cosmetics. Skins for Maleficent, Captain Hook, and Cruella de Vil will be available for purchase, each featuring alternate styles that reflect their classic animated appearances alongside modernized, battle-ready designs. Cruella, for example, swaps her heavy fur coat for a sleek, punk-inspired trench coat equipped with tactical gear.

A Persistent Universe

This level of integration is exactly what Disney executives teased when they announced their massive investment in Epic Games two years ago. The goal has always been to build a persistent universe where Disney’s intellectual properties can coexist and interact with Fortnite’s massive player base.

“Our fans want to do more than just watch our stories; they want to live in them,” Sean Shoptaw, Executive Vice President of Disney Games, explained in a statement. “Through UEFN, Epic has given us the tools to build a dark, immersive playground that honors the legacy of these villains while offering a level of interactivity we’ve never been able to achieve before on this scale.”

Launch Date and Event Pass

The expansion is scheduled to go live on October 13, 2026, and will run through November 3. It will be free for all players, though a premium “Villains Pass” will be offered, giving players a track to unlock additional cosmetic rewards, including a playable Hades skin inspired by the classic 1997 animated film Hercules.

For Epic, the event serves as a massive showcase for what UEFN can do. As the company continues to push Fortnite as a platform rather than just a game, high-profile collaborations like this show how major brands can build custom, high-fidelity experiences without needing to develop their own standalone software. If Reign of Shadows succeeds, it could set a new template for how Hollywood promotes its biggest franchises inside virtual worlds.
