Epic Games and Disney launch Disney Horizon inside Fortnite, featuring interactive theme parks, virtual coasters, and Pixar game modes.

Disney Horizon Launches in Fortnite with Virtual Theme Parks

Fortnite is no longer just a battle royale game. It is now a massive, digital theme park. Today, Epic Games and Disney officially launched Disney Horizon, an ambitious interactive universe built directly inside the Fortnite ecosystem. This release marks the first major milestone of Disney’s massive $1.5 billion investment in Epic, which was announced last year.

The new space is massive. Players can log in right now to explore iconic virtual landscapes, play new Pixar-themed games, and hang out with friends in digital versions of famous Disney parks. It is a bold play to redefine what a video game can be.

Inside the Virtual Theme Park

At the center of the experience is the Disney Horizon hub. Designed to feel like a living, breathing resort, the digital park lets players wander down a sprawling boardwalk inspired by California Adventure and Magic Kingdom. You can hop onto virtual rides, buy digital popcorn, and watch synchronized firework displays over a glowing castle. Epic Games used its Unreal Engine 5 technology to make the lighting and physics feel incredibly lifelike.

But this is not just a passive sightseeing tour. The hub is packed with interactive mini-games and hidden secrets. Players can complete daily quests to earn exclusive in-game cosmetics, including Mickey Mouse ear hats and customized glider skins. It is a sandbox designed to keep players coming back for more than just a quick look.

Pixar Takes the Spotlight with New Game Modes

Alongside the digital theme park, Epic Games introduced three standalone game modes developed in partnership with Pixar. These are not simple creative maps; they are fully fledged, custom-built gaming experiences inside Fortnite.

  • Monsters, Inc. Scream Arena: A fast-paced, hide-and-seek style multiplayer mode set in the scream factory. One team plays as kids trying to escape, while the other plays as monsters trying to gather scream energy.
  • Radiator Springs Grand Prix: A high-speed racing game that feels like a love letter to the Cars franchise. It features physics-based drifting, boost pads, and obstacle-filled tracks that wind through the desert.
  • Toy Story Backyard Defense: A cooperative, tower-defense style game. Players shrink down to toy-size to protect Andy’s backyard from waves of rogue, wind-up toys using foam dart blasters.

According to Epic, these Pixar modes will receive regular updates, including seasonal events and new characters. More Pixar properties, including The Incredibles and Finding Nemo, are already slated for future updates later this year.

A $1.5 Billion Bet on the Metaverse

This massive launch is the first tangible result of the deep partnership between Epic and Disney. When Disney acquired its stake in Epic Games in early 2024, the goal was clear: build a persistent “digital universe” where consumers can play, watch, shop, and interact with Disney’s massive library of stories.

“We wanted to create a place where the boundaries between gaming and classic storytelling completely dissolve,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, in a statement accompanying the launch. “Disney Horizon is the beginning of a multi-year journey. We are giving fans a new way to live inside the stories they love.”

For Epic Games, this is another step toward CEO Tim Sweeney’s long-held vision of an open metaverse. By integrating Disney directly into Fortnite, Epic keeps millions of players inside its ecosystem. They do not have to leave the game to watch a movie trailer, hang out with friends, or buy Disney merchandise.

How to Play and What it Costs

Like the rest of Fortnite, Disney Horizon is completely free to play. It does not require any additional downloads. Anyone with Fortnite installed on their PC, console, or mobile device can jump in by selecting the Disney Horizon tile on the main menu.

While the game modes and parks are free, players can spend V-Bucks—Fortnite’s in-game currency—on a massive new crossover shop. The shop features dozens of Disney and Pixar character skins, emotes, and back blings. Players can finally run around as Woody, Buzz Lightyear, or even a retro-style Steamboat Willie while wielding Fortnite’s iconic weapons.

The gates are open, and the crossover of the decade has officially begun.
