Fortnite Fans Rebel Against Expensive Fortnitemares Skins
Fortnite players are pushing back against Epic Games over the high cost of new Halloween crossover bundles.
The Premium Price of Halloween
Fortnitemares is usually a major highlight of the gaming calendar. Every October, Epic Games rolls out spooky map updates, fresh gameplay mechanics, and a wave of highly anticipated crossover skins. But this year, the atmosphere is decidedly tense. Instead of celebrating, the Fortnite community is expressing widespread frustration over the premium pricing of new Halloween cosmetic items.
The controversy centers on the newly released Fortnitemares bundles. Epic has partnered with iconic horror franchises to bring classic characters to the battle royale. This year’s lineup includes highly sought-after characters from classic slasher films and modern horror hits. However, when the Item Shop refreshed on the event’s opening night, excitement quickly turned into sticker shock.
Sticker Shock in the Item Shop
Individual character skins, which historically cost around 1,500 V-Bucks, are now priced at 2,000 V-Bucks or more. For players who want the complete experience—including matching harvesting tools, gliders, and character emotes—the total cost is even steeper. Complete bundles are currently listed at prices ranging from 2,800 to 3,400 V-Bucks.
In real-world currency, 2,800 V-Bucks translates to roughly $23 USD. If a player wants to pick up more than one of the headline crossover skins, they can easily expect to spend close to $50. For many fans, especially younger players and parents, this has pushed the cost of virtual cosmetics past a reasonable threshold.
“It is getting out of hand,” wrote one player on a Reddit thread that quickly gained thousands of upvotes. “I used to look forward to saving up a little money to get a couple of spooky skins. Now, buying just one bundle feels like a major investment. It is a free-to-play game, but these prices are actively keeping people from enjoying the event.”

The Removal of Rarities
This widespread pushback is not happening in a vacuum. Many players on platforms like TikTok and X are linking the high prices to Epic Games’ decision to retire traditional color-coded skin rarities. Previously, cosmetic prices were somewhat predictable based on whether an item was classified as Uncommon, Rare, Epic, or Legendary. Without those designated tiers, fans argue that Epic can price items arbitrarily without facing institutional limits.
Another common complaint involves how these bundles are packaged. Epic has increasingly locked highly desired accessories behind large, expensive bundles. If a player only wants a specific pickaxe or emote, they are often forced to purchase the entire character set to get it. This sales strategy has drawn heavy criticism from long-time supporters who prefer purchasing items individually.
The Economics of Licensing
Industry observers note that licensing fees are likely driving these higher price tags. Securing the rights to massive Hollywood intellectual properties is incredibly expensive. Film studios and rights holders demand significant royalties to allow their characters to appear in Fortnite. To cover these expenses and maintain profitability, Epic passes those costs directly to the players.
While the business reality makes sense on paper, it does little to satisfy a frustrated community. Players point out that a single virtual skin bundle now costs nearly as much as a fully realized indie game or a major expansion pack for other titles.
Epic Games has not released a formal statement regarding the community’s reaction. In past instances of player backlash, the developer has occasionally adjusted pricing or offered free cosmetic items as a gesture of goodwill. Whether they will take similar action this season remains to be seen. For now, community leaders are encouraging players to vote with their wallets and skip the premium purchases to send a message.
