Fortnite Pennywise Skin Leaks Spark Backlash Over Pricing
Fortnite fans are furious over the leaked Fortnitemares Pennywise bundle pricing and a locked reactive emote that players can’t use with other skins.
Fortnitemares is usually the highlight of the Fortnite calendar. Every October, Epic Games rolls out the red carpet for horror icons, transforming the island into a digital haunted house. This year, the hype was supposed to center on Derry’s favorite resident. Leaks revealed that Stephen King’s terrifying creation, Pennywise the Dancing Clown, is finally coming to the battle royale. But instead of celebrating, the community is up in arms.
The controversy started early Tuesday morning. Well-known data miners uncovered the files for the upcoming crossover, sharing high-resolution images of the cosmetic set online. The character model itself looks fantastic. Epic’s designers captured the eerie, yellow-eyed stare and dirty Victorian ruff of the modern cinematic monster perfectly. Sadly, the excitement ended the moment the pricing and item details leaked alongside the images.
The Steep Price of Horror
According to the leaks, the “Deadlights Bundle” will cost a whopping 2,600 V-Bucks. For players looking to buy only the Pennywise skin, the price tag stands at 1,800 V-Bucks. In real-world money, you cannot simply buy those exact amounts. Players will have to purchase the $22.99 V-Buck pack just to cover the cost of the bundle. That is a massive ask for a single character set, even one as iconic as Pennywise.
For that price, the bundle does pack in a few extras. It features the “Sewer Pipe” pickaxe, a “Paper Boat” glider resembling the ill-fated SS Georgie, and a “Red Balloon” back bling. But players argue that the individual pricing is artificially inflated to push people toward the bundle. It is a sales tactic that has grown increasingly common in Fortnite’s item shop, much to the dismay of long-time fans.
Locked Behind the Clown Mask
While the high cost raised eyebrows, the real breaking point for the community is the reactive emote. The bundle includes a special emote called “The Deadlights Dance,” which mimics the creepy, jerky jig Pennywise performs in the films. However, the leak confirmed that this emote is built-in. That means it is locked exclusively to the Pennywise skin.
If you purchase this bundle hoping to make Darth Vader, Peter Griffin, or Xenomorph do the iconic clown dance, you are out of luck. It simply won’t work. Epic Games has a history of locking crossover emotes to their respective skins, often citing licensing restrictions or animation rigging issues. Yet, players are tired of the excuses.
The backlash on social media was instant. On Reddit, a thread discussing the leak quickly racked up thousands of downvotes and angry comments. Many players pointed out that other horror crossovers, like Michael Myers or Resident Evil’s Leon Kennedy, did not suffer from these restrictive limitations.
Fans Call for a Boycott
The sentiment across community forums is clear: players feel Epic Games is pushing the limits of what they can charge for restricted items. Some are calling for a complete boycott of the Fortnitemares event until the developer reconsiders its cosmetic policy.
“I was ready to throw my money at this the second it was rumored,” one disgruntled fan wrote on X. “But 1,800 V-Bucks for a skin with a locked emote is just greedy. If I pay for an emote, I should be able to use it on whatever character I want. I’m keeping my wallet closed this year.”
Epic Games has not yet commented on the leaks. The developer rarely addresses datamined information before an official release. However, with the community’s mood souring just days before the event is scheduled to begin, the pressure is building. Whether Epic will listen to the feedback and unlock the emote before the patch goes live remains to be seen. But right now, this highly anticipated Halloween crossover is generating more dread than holiday cheer.
