Fortnite Servers Buckle Under Massive Disney Villains Demand

Disney Bad Guys Break the Fortnite Shop

Fortnite players are used to fighting for survival in the battle royale, but on Tuesday night, their biggest enemy wasn’t another player. It was a digital checkout line. The highly anticipated Disney Villains collection finally arrived in the Fortnite Item Shop as part of this year’s Fortnitemares event. Within minutes, the sheer volume of players trying to buy the new cosmetics crashed Epic Games’ payment servers.

The drop had been hyped for months. Ever since Epic Games announced its massive partnership with Disney, fans have wondered when the studio’s most iconic antagonists would get the Fortnite treatment. The answer came with the 2026 Fortnitemares update. The drop featured three legendary villains: Maleficent, Captain Hook, and Cruella de Vil.

A 45-Minute Payment Freeze

The shop updated at its usual time, 8:00 PM Eastern. Then, the digital storefront ground to a halt.

Almost immediately, social media lit up with screenshots of error screens. Players attempting to purchase V-Bucks or complete their transactions were met with spinning loading wheels and failed payment prompts. For about 45 minutes, the digital storefront was practically unusable. Some players reported that their V-Bucks were deducted without the skins actually appearing in their lockers, sparking brief panic in the community.

Epic Games was quick to react. The company’s official Fortnite Status account on X acknowledged the hiccup just fifteen minutes after the launch. The developers asked for patience while they scaled up server capacity to handle the unexpected surge in traffic.

By 8:50 PM, the digital bottleneck began to clear. Epic rolled out a backend hotfix that stabilized the checkout process, and players slowly began to see their purchases go through. The company confirmed shortly after that any V-Bucks taken during the freeze had been accounted for and the items were being delivered to player lockers.

What Was in the Viral Drop?

Why the massive rush? The skins themselves are surprisingly detailed. Maleficent comes with a transformation emote that lets her summon her dragon wings, alongside a spinning wheel back bling. Captain Hook’s set features a dual-wield pickaxe option—his signature rapier and, of course, his hook. Cruella de Vil sports a high-fashion look complete with a reactive fur coat that changes slightly as players rack up eliminations in matchmaking.

Individually, the skins cost 1,500 V-Bucks each. Epic also offered a discounted “Disney Villains Bundle” for 3,800 V-Bucks, which included all three characters, their respective back blings, and exclusive loading screens. This bundle seemed to be the primary target for players, offering a cheaper route to grab the whole set.

The Disney-Epic Partnership Grows

Fortnitemares has always been one of Epic’s most successful seasonal events. But the 2026 edition feels different. The inclusion of heavy-hitting Disney intellectual property shows how deep the collaboration between the two media giants really goes. It is a sign of what is to come as Epic continues to build out its persistent Disney-themed universe inside the Fortnite ecosystem.

For now, the servers are stable, and the Item Shop is running smoothly. Players can finally drop into the island dressed as their favorite animated villains. Just expect to see a lot of Maleficents running around the battle royale map over the next few weeks.
