Epic Games and Universal Monsters Team Up for Fortnitemares 2026
Epic Games partners with Universal Monsters for Fortnitemares 2026, showcasing Unreal Engine 6’s revolutionary dynamic lighting system.
Epic Games is completely changing how players experience Halloween in Fortnite. For Fortnitemares 2026, the publisher is teaming up with Universal Products & Experiences to bring some of cinema’s oldest nightmares to life. It is not just about selling a few retro skins in the shop, though. This time, players are getting a massive, standalone horror-survival campaign built inside Unreal Engine 6.
The collaboration is designed to show off what Epic’s latest engine can actually do. Specifically, it highlights a new dynamic lighting system that makes shadows a core part of the gameplay.
The Power of Pure Darkness
In previous years, Fortnitemares relied on colorful, cartoonish spooky vibes. Not this time. The 2026 event takes a hard turn into classic black-and-white gothic horror. Thanks to Unreal Engine 6, light and shadow behave exactly like they would in a physical film studio.
The new engine calculates light bounces in real time. If a player carries a torch through Dracula’s crumbling castle, the dancing flame casts long, wavering shadows across the stone walls. These shadows are not just for show. They are active gameplay mechanics. Monsters can blend into pitch-black corners, invisible to the naked eye until a player shines a flashlight directly at them. Conversely, sudden bright lights can temporarily blind certain beasts, giving players a brief window to run.
“We wanted to make players afraid of the dark again,” says Saxs Persson, Executive Vice President of Epic’s Fortnite Ecosystem. “In most multiplayer games, you can just turn up your monitor’s brightness to cheat the shadows. Unreal Engine 6 prevents that. If there is no light source in a room, that room is completely, mathematically black.”
Classic Monsters, Modern Terror
The heart of the campaign is a four-player cooperative mode called The Midnight Hunt. Players find themselves stranded on a new, grim island inspired by classic 1930s Universal horror films. The map features iconic locations like Frankenstein’s laboratory, Dracula’s mountain fortress, and a swamp stalked by the Gill-man.
Each monster behaves differently, forcing squads to adapt:
- The Wolf Man: He hunts by sound. Running or firing weapons draws him instantly. He moves incredibly fast through the foggy forests.
- Frankenstein’s Monster: A slow but unstoppable juggernaut. He can smash through player-built walls easily, making traditional Fortnite building tactics useless.
- Dracula: The master of the castle. He can turn into a swarm of bats to bypass defenses and attacks primarily from above.
- The Mummy: He curses players who linger too long in the ancient tombs, slowly draining their health unless they find sacred water pools.
Instead of the usual assault rifles and rocket launchers, players have to scavenge for specialized gear. UV lanterns, silver-tipped crossbows, and wooden stakes replace the typical battle royale loot pool.
A Cinematic Masterpiece in Real Time
This partnership is a big deal for Universal, too. The studio has spent years looking for ways to make its classic monsters appeal to younger audiences without losing their eerie edge.
“These characters have been terrifying audiences for nearly a century,” says Greg Reed, Vice President of Global Partnerships at Universal. “Seeing them rendered with the absolute pinnacle of modern gaming technology is breathtaking. It is like stepping directly into the original movies, but with the threat turned up to eleven.”
To complete the old-school movie feel, Epic is introducing an optional “silver screen” visual filter. This turns the entire game into a grainy, high-contrast black-and-white film, complete with film grain and scratches.
Release Date and Cosmetics
Fortnitemares 2026 is scheduled to launch on October 13, 2026, and will run through November 3.
Naturally, players can still buy themed cosmetics. Epic is releasing a massive wave of outfits, including retro-accurate versions of Dracula, the Bride of Frankenstein, and the Invisible Man. There will also be modern, stylized redesigns of these characters created by popular comic book artists.
The campaign itself will be free for all players, though completing specific challenges within the mode will unlock exclusive loading screens, back blings, and weapon wraps.
