Fortnite Launches Epic Disney Chronicles World Expansion
Epic Games launches Disney Chronicles, a massive persistent world inside Fortnite stemming from their $1.5 billion partnership.
Fortnite isn’t just a battle royale game anymore. It hasn’t been for a long time, but today marks its biggest evolution yet. Epic Games has officially rolled out “Disney Chronicles,” a massive, persistent virtual universe living directly inside the Fortnite launcher. This release is the first major milestone of the historic $1.5 billion partnership Disney and Epic forged earlier this year.
It is a permanent expansion. Unlike previous limited-time Marvel or Star Wars crossovers, Disney Chronicles is built to stay. Players can log in today to explore a sprawling hub that connects multiple distinct worlds, each representing a different corner of Disney’s massive intellectual property portfolio. The scale of the project is unprecedented for an in-game platform.
A Multitude of Worlds to Explore
From the neon-drenched streets of a Tron-inspired digital grid to a magic-infused fantasy kingdom, the visual variety is immediately apparent. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney described the launch as a foundational step toward a true open metaverse. “We wanted to build a place where players don’t just visit Disney stories, but live in them, modify them, and hang out with friends across generations of characters,” Sweeney said during a brief virtual press conference.
At launch, Disney Chronicles features three primary zones:
- The Great Valley: A whimsical, Pixar-styled region where players can complete platforming puzzles, gather resources, and build custom virtual homes.
- Shattered Orbit: A chaotic sci-fi zone blending Star Wars dogfights with Marvel cosmic battles.
- The Inkwell: A stylized, retro space reminiscent of 1930s hand-drawn animation, complete with its own unique physics and stealth-based challenges.
It’s not just about wandering around. The expansion introduces a deep, persistent progression system. Activities completed in Disney Chronicles yield “Spark Points,” a new in-game currency used to unlock exclusive cosmetics, glider skins, and emotes that carry over into Fortnite’s Battle Royale and LEGO modes. Players can also earn classic outfits, allowing them to dress up as their favorite characters while exploring these new lands.

The Business Behind the Magic
Disney’s massive $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, announced in February, signaled a long-term bet on interactive entertainment. Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, emphasized that this is only the beginning. “Disney Chronicles is our new digital front door,” D’Amaro noted in a statement. “It allows us to reach audiences where they already spend their time. This isn’t a marketing stunt. It’s a living, breathing theme park that will evolve every single month.”
Indeed, Epic has already outlined a roadmap for the rest of the year. Upcoming updates promise to introduce player-creation tools. Using a customized version of Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEF) specifically tailored for Disney assets, players will eventually be able to design their own Disney-themed games and share them with the wider community.
A Safe and Competitive Space
Of course, safety is a major focus here. Epic has implemented strict moderation filters and dedicated family-friendly servers to ensure the space remains safe for younger players who might be drawn in by familiar animated faces. This setup ensures parents can let their kids explore without worry.
Industry analysts are watching closely. This launch represents a direct challenge to platforms like Roblox, which has long dominated the user-generated content and brand-partnership space. By securing Disney’s exclusive backing for a persistent world of this scale, Epic is positioning Fortnite as the premier destination for virtual brand experiences. It shifts the game from a competitive shooter into a massive social platform.
For players, the barrier to entry is nonexistent. Disney Chronicles is free to play and accessible on all platforms where Fortnite is currently available, including consoles, PC, and mobile via cloud streaming. The update is live now, requiring a 12-gigabyte download. Whether you want to customize a futuristic speeder or build a digital castle with friends, Epic and Disney are betting you will do it inside Fortnite.
