Fortnite Disney Horizon Expansion Release Date and Trailer Announced
Epic Games and Disney have revealed the launch date and gameplay trailer for Disney Horizon, the massive new persistent universe inside Fortnite.
A Permanent New World Inside Fortnite
The highly anticipated virtual playground from Epic Games and Disney finally has a launch date and a fresh look. It is called Disney Horizon.
During a surprise broadcast, the two entertainment giants dropped a three-minute gameplay trailer. They also confirmed the massive persistent universe will go live inside Fortnite on October 28. This is not just another temporary crossover event.
Instead, Disney Horizon represents the first major project born from Disney’s massive $1.5 billion equity stake in Epic Games, which was announced earlier this year. It is a permanent digital world existing alongside Fortnite’s Battle Royale, Rocket Racing, and LEGO modes. The goal is to merge social spaces, user-generated creation, and digital retail into a single, cohesive experience.
What the Gameplay Trailer Reveals
The new trailer gives us our first real look at how this ecosystem actually functions. Players start their journey in a central hub called the Cosmos. From there, they can jump through glowing portals to different neighborhoods themed around classic Disney franchises. The footage showed off a neon-drenched Tron racing arena, a sprawling Star Wars starship shipyard, and a highly detailed recreation of Andy’s bedroom from Toy Story.
There is a heavy focus on player agency and building. According to Epic Games, players can use tools powered by Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) to build their own games and social hubs using licensed Disney assets. Want to design a custom podracing track on Tatooine? Or maybe a haunted maze based on a classic Disney villain’s castle? The platform will allow exactly that, provided you play by Disney’s family-friendly safety guidelines.
“This is a massive step forward in how people interact with our stories,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement accompanying the reveal. “We aren’t just letting people watch our worlds. We are inviting them to live in them, build them, and share them with friends.”

Avatars, Outfits, and the Virtual Economy
One of the biggest questions surrounding the project has been how avatars will work. The trailer cleared up some of that mystery. Players can use their standard Fortnite skins inside Disney Horizon, but the expansion also introduces a new system called Horizon Identity.
This new system lets users customize a specialized Disney-styled avatar. You can mix and match clothing and accessories from different intellectual properties. Picture a character wearing a Mickey Mouse ear hat, a Mandalorian chest piece, and wielding a Marvel Captain America shield.
Of course, monetization is a massive part of this deal. A dedicated digital storefront will let players buy exclusive virtual merchandise. While some items can be earned through gameplay challenges, premium cosmetics will cost V-Bucks, Fortnite’s established in-game currency. Epic confirmed that players who already own certain Marvel or Star Wars skins in Fortnite will find those items instantly compatible with the new Disney Horizon spaces.
The Future of the Platform
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has long talked about his vision for an open, connected digital space. Disney Horizon seems to be his biggest bet yet.
“We wanted to build something that feels permanent,” Sweeney said. “This isn’t a marketing stunt that disappears after a season. This is a foundational expansion of Fortnite that will grow for decades.”
Importantly, Epic’s existing creator economy will extend to Disney Horizon. Independent developers who build approved maps and games inside the Disney-themed zones will be eligible for payouts through Fortnite’s engagement pool. However, Epic noted that Disney-themed creations will face a much stricter moderation process to ensure they remain family-friendly and true to the respective brands.
When the expansion launches on October 28, it will be free for all Fortnite players. Epic says the initial launch is just Phase One. They have plans to roll out more neighborhoods, gameplay tools, and franchise integrations throughout next year. The download goes live at 9:00 AM Eastern Time, following a brief server maintenance period.
