Fortnite’s New Item Shop Feature Sparks Pre-Fortnitemares Outrage
Epic Games rolled out a controversial Dynamic Bundling feature in the Fortnite Item Shop just days before the highly anticipated Fortnitemares 2026.
Epic Games just shook up the Fortnite Item Shop. Players are not happy. Right before the massive Fortnitemares 2026 event, a new feature called ‘Dynamic Bundling’ went live. It was supposed to make shopping easier. Instead, it sparked an immediate uproar across Reddit, X, and gaming forums.
At its core, Dynamic Bundling changes how players buy cosmetics. The game now packages related skins, pickaxes, gliders, and emotes into smart groups. If you already own part of the set, the price drops. That sounds great on paper. But there is a catch. A big one.
How Dynamic Bundling Actually Works
In the past, players could browse the shop and pick exactly what they wanted. You could buy a single skin for 1,200 V-Bucks and ignore the rest of the set. Now, Epic is locking several highly anticipated items behind these new mandatory bundles. If you want the standout skin, you have to buy the whole package.
Take the upcoming ‘Hollow Sentinel’ skin, a leaked favorite for Fortnitemares 2026. Under the old system, it would likely cost 1,500 V-Bucks. Under the new Dynamic Bundling rules, it is only available in a 2,800 V-Bucks package that includes a glider, a wrap, and an emote you might never use. Even with the dynamic discount, players who own nothing in the set are forced to pay the premium price just to get the main attraction.
‘This is a massive step backward,’ said popular Fortnite community commentator and dataminer Lucas7yoshi in an online post. ‘It feels like Epic is artificially inflating the cost of entry for the best skins. They are taking away player choice and calling it a feature.’
The Fortnitemares Timing
The timing of this roll-out is no accident. Fortnitemares is Fortnite’s biggest annual event. Every October, millions of players flock to the game to grab limited-time spooky skins, pop-culture crossovers, and eerie cosmetics. It is historically the most lucrative month of the year for Epic Games.

By launching Dynamic Bundling now, Epic stands to maximize its revenue during a high-traffic period. But the community sees right through it. On the Fortnite Competitive subreddit, threads criticizing the move quickly racked up thousands of upvotes. Many users accuse Epic of predatory monetization tactics.
‘I have saved up 1,600 V-Bucks for the Halloween update,’ one player wrote on Reddit. ‘Now I find out the skin I want is trapped in a 3,000 V-Buck bundle with a bunch of junk I will never equip. It is incredibly frustrating.’
A Pattern of Unpopular Changes
This is not the first time Epic has faced backlash over shop and locker changes. Earlier, the developer faced intense criticism for removing color-coded rarities from locker items. Many players felt that change made sorting inventories a nightmare. Combined with the new Dynamic Bundling, some fans feel Epic is slowly stripping away the game’s classic identity in favor of corporate optimization.
Epic Games has defended the change, arguing that the system is designed to streamline a bloated inventory. Over the last nine years, Fortnite has added thousands of individual cosmetics. The Item Shop grid has grown increasingly crowded, making it difficult for casual players to navigate.
‘We want to make the Item Shop cleaner and easier to browse,’ an Epic Games representative said in a brief statement. ‘Dynamic Bundling ensures that players see cohesive sets rather than a fragmented wall of single items. It also guarantees that players who want the complete look get the best possible V-Bucks value.’
Will Epic Walk It Back?
Epic Games is famous for listening to player feedback—eventually. In the past, the developer has reverted controversial UI changes, weapon balances, and even pricing structures after sustained community pressure. Whether they will budge on a core monetization feature right before their biggest sales event remains to be seen.
For now, Fortnitemares 2026 is set to begin next week. Players will have to decide if those spooky skins are worth the extra V-Bucks, or if it is time to keep their digital wallets closed.
