Fortnitemares 2026: Freddy Krueger Debuts Amid Fierce Pricing Debate
Epic Games brought horror icon Freddy Krueger to Fortnite, but fans are furious over the steep V-Buck prices of the new Halloween bundles.
The Horror of the Item Shop
Fortnitemares is back. But this year, the real terror isn’t the monsters lurking in the spooky fog. It’s the price tags in the Item Shop. Epic Games officially launched its highly anticipated 2026 Halloween event this week, debuting the long-rumored Freddy Krueger crossover. Yet, instead of celebrating the arrival of the Springwood slasher, the community is locked in a fierce debate over what many call predatory pricing.
For years, horror fans have begged Epic to bring the dream demon to the island. Now he is here, complete with his signature dirty fedora, striped sweater, and razor-sharp claw. But getting your hands on him will cost a pretty penny.
Breaking Down the V-Buck Costs
The Freddy Krueger skin on its own costs 1,800 V-Bucks. If you want the complete Nightmare on Elm Street bundle, which includes the skin, a custom claw pickaxe, a Boiler Room back bling, and a unique Dream Warrior emote, you will have to shell out 2,800 V-Bucks. For players wanting the entire horror lineup—which also packages classic skins like Leatherface—the Classic Slasher Mega-Bundle sits at a staggering 4,500 V-Bucks.
In real-world currency, V-Bucks aren’t cheap. Currently, 1,000 V-Bucks cost about $8.99 USD. This means buying the mega-bundle requires players to spend roughly $40. That is almost the price of a full, standalone video game.
“I was so excited for Freddy, but 1,800 V-Bucks for just the base skin is ridiculous,” one player wrote on the Fortnite subreddit. “They didn’t even include the claw as part of the skin. You have to buy it separately or get the bundle. It feels like a cash grab.”
Comparing Past Fortnitemares Events
To put this in perspective, look at previous Fortnitemares events. Back in 2022, the Ash Williams skin from the Evil Dead franchise launched at 1,500 V-Bucks, and it came packaged with a back bling. Jack Skellington, who arrived in 2023, was priced at 1,500 V-Bucks for the skin alone, with a highly detailed bundle costing 2,600 V-Bucks. The steady climb to 1,800 V-Bucks for a base skin represents a significant jump in pricing.

Many point out that the bundle discounts aren’t as generous as they used to be. Usually, buying a bundle saves you at least 800 V-Bucks compared to buying everything individually. With this Krueger set, the savings are minimal. You are basically forced into the bundle if you want the full experience, because the individual items are priced so aggressively.
Why Are Prices Rising?
This is not the first time Epic Games has faced backlash over cosmetic pricing. Over the past two years, the developer has shifted how it values collaborations. Industry insiders suggest that licensing iconic horror IPs has become increasingly expensive. Movie studios want a larger cut, and Epic passes those costs onto the players.
There is also the multi-game factor to consider. Many modern Fortnite skins are no longer just for Battle Royale. They must be compatible with LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival. Epic often uses this cross-compatibility to justify higher price points. However, for players who only care about the classic shooter mode, this added value feels empty.
Community Backlash and the Future of Collabs
Social media has been flooded with memes mocking the prices. On X, formerly Twitter, the hashtag #Fortnitemares is filled with images of empty virtual wallets and jokes about Freddy Krueger stealing players’ actual bank accounts instead of their souls. Some veteran players are urging a boycott of the Item Shop until prices drop.
But will Epic yield? Historically, the publisher rarely alters prices once a major collaboration launches. Occasionally, they offer small make-good items or partial V-Buck refunds if the backlash becomes a public relations nightmare, but a permanent price drop for these active bundles remains highly unlikely.
For now, players must decide if nostalgia is worth the heavy premium. If you want to terrorize opponents as the master of dreams, you will have to pay nightmare prices to do it.
