Epic Games’ new API privacy updates are forcing Fortnite Tracker to completely rebuild its Power Rankings system before the late-2026 FNCS matches.

Epic Games API Changes Force Fortnite Tracker to Overhaul PR

The End of Automatic Tracking?

For nearly a decade, competitive Fortnite players have shared a collective obsession: Power Rankings. Often shortened to just PR, these points are the lifeblood of the scene. They dictate who gets signed, who gets scrim invitations, and who gets ignored. But a looming shadow has fallen over this system.

Epic Games is preparing to roll out massive API privacy updates. The changes, scheduled to take effect later this year, will restrict how third-party sites harvest user match history. For Fortnite Tracker, the premier platform for competitive stats, the news is a bombshell. The site must now completely rebuild its PR algorithm before the highly anticipated late-2026 Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) kicks off.

Why Epic Is Locking the Gates

Epic’s decision isn’t personal; it’s legal and ethical. Over the past few years, global data privacy laws have become incredibly strict. Tech giants are under constant pressure to protect user data by default. Epic is shifting its API model to a strict opt-in system. Soon, unless a player explicitly grants permission, their competitive data, match history, and tournament placements will remain hidden from public scraping.

Currently, Fortnite Tracker automatically pulls data from every tournament lobby. If you play, you get tracked. That automation is about to die. Once the API update goes live, the tracking site will only see a wall of randomized user IDs and redacted names.

The Mad Dash to Rebuild

Tracker Network, the parent company behind Fortnite Tracker, isn’t giving up. They are already working on a massive overhaul. Instead of relying on Epic’s open data feeds, the site will transition to a voluntary, verification-based ecosystem.

“We knew this day was coming,” says veteran site developer Marcus Vance. “Privacy is a priority for Epic, and we respect that. But it means our old way of calculating PR is obsolete. We can’t just scrape public leaderboards anymore. We have to build a system where players actively link their accounts to verify their scores. It’s a huge shift, but it’s the only way forward.”

Claim Fortnite Rewards

This new approach creates a massive logistical headache. For the Power Rankings to remain accurate, every single competitive player—from tier-one pros to casual console competitors—will need to register on the site. If top players refuse to link their accounts, the leaderboards will become useless. Gaps in data will distort the rankings, leading to inflated or deflated PR scores.

The High Stakes of Late-2026 FNCS

The timing of this overhaul couldn’t be worse. The competitive scene is gearing up for the late-2026 FNCS, an event expected to feature the largest prize pool in years. Teams are already forming, and organizations are actively scouting. Historically, PR has been the primary metric used to evaluate potential recruits.

Without a reliable ranking system, the scouting process could descend into chaos. “It’s scary,” says professional player Liam “Vortex” Chen. “If PR gets wiped or becomes inaccurate, how do we prove our worth to orgs? We rely on Fortnite Tracker to show our consistency over months of tournaments. If that goes away right before the biggest event of 2026, it ruins the scouting pipeline.”

Esports organizations are also worried. Many use automated bots to track PR fluctuations to find rising stars. These bots will stop working once Epic shuts down the public API endpoints.

A Community-Driven Future

Despite the hurdles, Fortnite Tracker remains optimistic. The developers plan to launch a massive community campaign to encourage players to link their Epic accounts. They are also adding new features, like customizable player profiles and verified team rosters, to incentivize the migration.

It is a gamble. The success of the new Power Rankings will depend entirely on the community’s willingness to participate. If players cooperate, the system could become more accurate than ever, free from the duplicate accounts and bot spam that plagued the old database. If they don’t, the competitive Fortnite landscape will lose its most valuable compass just when it needs it most.
