Epic Games Launches Disney Horizon Sandbox Inside Fortnite
Epic Games and Disney have rolled out Disney Horizon, a permanent sandbox world inside Fortnite featuring Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar zones.
Fortnite is no longer just a battle royale game. It hasn’t been for years. But its newest expansion might be its most ambitious leap yet. Epic Games has officially rolled out “Disney Horizon,” a permanent, persistent digital universe built right inside the Fortnite ecosystem. It represents a massive shift in how we think about virtual spaces.
This isn’t a quick promotional stunt. It isn’t a limited-time skin pack, either. Instead, Disney Horizon is a massive virtual world where players can walk, build, and play inside dedicated zones for Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. It runs 24/7. And it is designed to last for years.
A Billion-Dollar Playground
The launch is the first major result of Disney’s jaw-dropping $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, which made headlines earlier this year. Disney CEO Bob Iger called the deal the company’s “biggest entry ever into the world of games.” Now, we are seeing exactly what that money bought. The goal is to build an interconnected universe where fans can watch, play, and create alongside their favorite characters.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has long talked about building the “metaverse.” With Disney Horizon, that vision is finally taking a concrete shape. “We want to give players a space where they don’t just watch stories,” Sweeney said during a recent showcase. “They live in them.”

Inside the Zones: Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar
When players load into Disney Horizon, they start in a central hub. From there, they can jump into three distinct, highly interactive regions:
- The Star Wars Zone: Players land on a remote outpost on the outer rim. Here, you can pilot X-Wings, engage in lightsaber training, or hang out in a virtual cantina with friends. The focus is on sandbox survival and exploration.
- The Marvel Training Ground: This zone features a massive, walkable Avengers Tower. Players can test out iconic gear, like Iron Man’s repulsors or Captain America’s shield, in cooperative combat trials against simulated threats.
- The Pixar Playland: Designed with a lighter, highly stylized aesthetic, this area lets players solve physics-based puzzles with characters from Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. It also features a creative workshop where players can build their own custom structures.
Power to the Creators
What makes this world different from typical expansions is the focus on player creation. Epic has integrated its Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) directly into Disney Horizon. This means players can use official Disney assets—legally and safely—to build their own custom maps, games, and social spaces. There are rules, of course. You cannot have Mickey Mouse wielding a rocket launcher, but you can build a custom racing track through the streets of Monstropolis.
The economy is also highly integrated. Cosmetics you buy in Fortnite can be worn in Disney Horizon, and progress made in the Disney sandbox contributes to your overall Fortnite battle pass. It is a seamless ecosystem. It keeps players locked into the same platform, regardless of what they want to do that day.
What Lies Ahead
This is only the beginning. Epic and Disney have already confirmed that classic Disney Animation properties and even virtual recreations of real-world theme park rides are coming in future updates. The companies plan to treat this as a living platform that evolves alongside new movie releases and real-world events.
For Disney, it is a way to capture the attention of a younger audience that spends more time in interactive media than watching traditional television. For Epic, it cements Fortnite as the ultimate destination for digital entertainment. The battle lines for the future of the internet are being drawn, and right now, Epic has a massive head start.
