Fortnite Servers Down: Matchmaking Disabled for Fortnitemares

0

Epic Games has taken Fortnite servers offline today, October 3, to prepare for the massive Fortnitemares update. Here is when servers will be back.

If you tried logging into Fortnite early this morning, you were probably met with a blank screen or a frustrating connection error. Don’t worry. Your internet is fine. Epic Games has officially pulled the plug on the servers for scheduled maintenance today, October 3.

This is not just any routine cleanup, though. The developers are clearing the deck for the highly anticipated Fortnitemares 2026 update. This massive patch is set to bring the game’s beloved Halloween festivities to life with new skins, map changes, and spooky weapons.

Here is everything you need to know about today’s server downtime, when you can expect to jump back into the Battle Bus, and what spooky surprises might be waiting on the other side.

When Did Fortnite Go Offline?

Epic Games confirmed the downtime schedule through their official Fortnite Status account on social media. The server offline process kicked off early on Thursday morning. Matchmaking was disabled first to let active games wrap up safely.

To prepare for the transition, Epic disabled matchmaking 30 minutes before the actual maintenance window. For players in North America, this meant games were cut off at 3:30 AM ET (12:30 AM PT). The servers officially shut down entirely at 4:00 AM ET (1:00 AM PT / 9:00 AM BST).

During this period, you will not be able to log into the game, check your locker, or purchase items from the shop. The Epic Games Launcher will show the game as offline.

How Long Will the Downtime Last?

Epic Games rarely gives an exact time for when the servers will turn back on. Maintenance windows can be highly unpredictable. However, looking at past major seasonal updates, we can make an educated guess.

Get Know Instant Access

Typically, Fortnite major patches keep the game offline for anywhere between two and four hours. If everything goes according to plan, the servers should start blinking back to life around 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM ET. That means UK players can expect to get back in around noon.

That said, major event patches like Fortnitemares 2026 are notoriously heavy. The file sizes are bound to be large. Occasionally, technical hiccups can push the downtime back by an hour or two. If you have a slow internet connection, it is a good idea to start your download as soon as the patch becomes available on your console or PC.

What Can Players Expect?

For the Fortnite community, Fortnitemares is the crown jewel of the yearly calendar. It is the annual Halloween event where the battle royale island gets a spooky makeover, complete with eerie fog, haunted decorations, and plenty of jump scares. This year’s iteration promises to be the biggest yet.

While Epic has kept tight-lipped about the exact details of the update, data miners and leakers have given us plenty to chew on. Here is what is rumored to arrive with today’s patch:

  • Returning Spooky Loot: Expect classic items like the Pumpkin Launcher, Witch Brooms, and Candy buckets to make their return to the active loot pool.
  • Map Transformations: Several points of interest on the current island are expected to undergo creepy redesigns, featuring cobwebs, jack-o’-lanterns, and perhaps even some wandering monsters.
  • New Collaborations: Fortnitemares is famous for its horror crossovers. Rumors are swirling about fresh partnerships with iconic horror movie franchises, bringing terrifying new skins to the Item Shop.
  • Spooky Quests: Players will likely have access to a brand-new set of free challenges, offering Halloween-themed cosmetics, back blings, and XP boosts.

What to Do While You Wait

Since the game is completely inaccessible, now is the perfect time to make sure your platform is ready. If you play on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or PC, check your download queue. Patch updates usually roll out to these platforms about an hour after the servers go dark.

Downloading the update early means you will be ready to drop in the second Epic flings the virtual gates back open. We will continue to monitor the status of the servers and update this story as soon as the game is back online.
