Fortnite Exclusivity Sunset Brings Back Classic Battle Pass Skins
Epic Games shakes up the Fortnite community by bringing highly coveted Chapter 1 and 2 Battle Pass skins to the daily Item Shop rotation.
The Vault Has Opened
Fortnite’s rarest skins are no longer locked away. For years, Epic Games relied on a simple, unspoken promise: if you did not grind out a Battle Pass during its specific season, those cosmetic items were gone forever. That era is officially over. Epic Games has triggered its highly anticipated “Exclusivity Sunset” policy, blowing the vault doors wide open. Now, legendary outfits from Chapters 1 and 2 are starting to make their debut in the daily Item Shop rotation. It is one of the biggest structural changes in the game’s history.
The rollout began quietly this week. Players logging in after the daily store reset were stunned to find iconic characters that previously defined veteran status. Skins like Drift from Chapter 1, Season 5, and Midas from Chapter 2, Season 2, appeared with standard V-Buck price tags. For years, running into someone wearing these outfits in a lobby meant you were facing a veteran. Now, anyone with a credit card or a stash of saved V-Bucks can acquire them in seconds.
A Deeply Divided Community
The reaction from the player base was instant and incredibly polarized. On one hand, newer players are absolutely thrilled. Millions of gamers who entered the ecosystem recently through LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, or Fortnite Festival missed out on years of classic character designs. They are glad to finally have a shot at them.
“I have wanted Midas since I started playing with my friends in 2022,” says 16-year-old player Marcus Vance. “Paying 1,500 V-Bucks for him in the shop feels amazing. I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance.”
On the other side of the fence, long-time players are furious. For years, account rarity was a form of social currency within the community. Having an account filled with early-chapter skins was a point of pride. Many veterans feel Epic has stripped away the value of their early dedication and effort.

“It really cheapens the grind we put in years ago,” veteran player Sarah Jenkins posted on a community forum. “We stayed up late finishing those weekly challenges because we were told these things were exclusive. Now they are just store filler. It feels like our time wasn’t respected.”
Why Epic Made the Move
The business logic behind Epic’s decision is clear. While Fortnite remains a powerhouse, keeping players engaged requires a constant supply of high-value cosmetics. The early Battle Passes contain some of the most recognizable and beloved designs in the entire gaming world. Keeping them locked away forever meant leaving massive amounts of revenue on the table.
By sunsetting exclusivity, Epic accomplishes two things at once:
- They monetize their massive, pre-existing back catalog of designs.
- They give newer players a powerful reason to log in and check the Item Shop every single day.
To help soften the blow for original owners, Epic has introduced a compromise. Players who unlocked these legacy skins during their original runs have been awarded exclusive “Legacy” style variants. These edits feature unique glowing trims or distinct color schemes that store buyers cannot obtain. It is a small nod to the players who were there first, though it has not completely silenced the criticism.
The Death of Digital Scarcity
This policy shift represents a broader trend in the live-service gaming market. The concept of absolute digital scarcity is slowly dying. When even the most exclusive virtual goods eventually come with an expiration date, the pressure to purchase passes out of “FOMO”—the fear of missing out—starts to decline. However, Epic is betting that the sheer volume of sales from the Item Shop will more than compensate for any slight drop in Battle Pass urgency.
For now, millions of players are glued to the shop reset countdown every evening. The rulebook has been rewritten. No one knows which classic skin will show up next, but one thing is certain: the vault is open, and there is no going back.
