Fortnite Chapter 7 Launches Disney Horizon Persistent Universe

Epic Games has officially launched Disney Horizon in Fortnite Chapter 7, introducing a permanent virtual universe for Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars fans.

Fortnite is no longer just a battle royale. It hasn’t been for a long time, but today marks its most ambitious shift yet. Alongside the launch of Chapter 7, Epic Games has officially went live with Disney Horizon. This is the permanent, persistent digital universe that Disney and Epic have been building behind closed doors for more than a year.

The launch is the first major milestone of a massive partnership. Back in early 2024, Disney shook up the entertainment industry by acquiring a $1.5 billion equity stake in Epic Games. Disney chief executive Bob Iger called it the company’s biggest gaming venture ever. Now, players are finally getting their first hands-on look at what that money actually bought. Disney Horizon isn’t a temporary marketing event. It’s a permanent virtual world built inside the Fortnite ecosystem, designed to grow and evolve indefinitely.

A Portal Into Disney’s Worlds

Players entering Chapter 7 will notice a brand-new option on their main menu. Clicking on the Disney Horizon tab takes players out of the chaotic battle royale lobby and drops them into a sprawling, stylized hub world. From this central plaza, players can step through portals to explore dedicated zones built around Disney’s biggest franchises.

At launch, Horizon features several distinct neighborhoods:

  • The Star Wars Outpost: A dusty, outer-rim settlement where players can customize starfighters, buy unique galactic gear, and participate in community space battles.
  • The Marvel Helicarrier: A floating high-tech base camp where fans can hang out, show off their hero cosmetics, and queue up for cooperative boss fights against classic villains.
  • Pixar Playland: A vibrant, physics-based playground inspired by Toy Story and Monsters, Inc., built specifically for casual mini-games and social hangouts.
  • The Disney Classic Kingdom: A cozy, nostalgic space centered around a digital recreation of the iconic fantasy castle, serving as the main social hub for events and virtual movie screenings.

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney has long spoken about his desire to build an open, interconnected metaverse. Disney Horizon looks like the closest realization of that goal yet. Sweeney explained that the objective wasn’t just to sell digital toys, but to create a shared space where people can build their own fun. The tools in Horizon let players design their own mini-games using Disney assets, utilizing a modified version of the Unreal Editor for Fortnite.

How the Economy and Gameplay Work

The integration between Fortnite and Disney Horizon is deep but optional. You do not have to fight other players to enjoy Horizon. In fact, combat is completely disabled in the main Disney zones. Instead, the focus is on socializing, building, and light cooperative gameplay. Your existing locker of skins and emotes carries over, meaning you can walk around Pixar Playland dressed as Goku, Xenomorph, or standard Fortnite characters.

The economy relies on Fortnite’s standard V-Bucks currency, but Epic has introduced a new, unified Disney Pass. This progression system lets players unlock character skins, glider designs, and building materials specifically themed around classic Disney properties by completing casual, non-violent quests within the Horizon world.

Epic Games wants this to feel like a living, breathing theme park. The studio plans to host live seasonal events, virtual merchandise drops, and interactive storytelling segments that tie directly into upcoming Disney theatrical releases. It’s a massive bet on the future of digital spaces. If it works, Epic will have secured its spot as the primary operating system for the next generation of online entertainment.

The Road Ahead

Industry analysts are watching the launch closely. Building virtual worlds is incredibly expensive, and keeping players engaged after the initial novelty wears off is a constant struggle. But Epic has a major advantage. It already has hundreds of millions of active monthly players who are used to spending money and time inside the game.

For Disney, this is a way to reach a younger audience that spends less time watching traditional television and more time hanging out with friends online. The launch of Chapter 7 is just the beginning. Epic says new portals and brand integrations will roll out every few months, keeping the digital horizon constantly expanding.
