October is right around the corner, and Epic Games is ready to turn up the terror. The developer just dropped the full details for Fortnitemares 2026, and it’s shaping up to be the most ambitious Halloween event the battle royale has ever seen. This year, players aren’t just fighting each other. They’re fighting the elements, a terrifying new storm, and some of the most famous horror icons in gaming and cinema history.

Freddy Fazbear and Ghostface Arrive

Rumors have circulated in the community for years, but Epic finally made it official. Five Nights at Freddy’s and the legendary Scream franchise are headlining the 2026 crossover event. Starting next week, players can grab skins for Freddy Fazbear and Ghostface in the Item Shop. But these aren’t just simple cosmetic outfits.

Freddy comes with a built-in traversal emote that mimics his creepy, robotic walk. Ghostface, on the other hand, features a custom reactive back bling that counts your game eliminations with a bloody slash. Epic has also teased a few unlockable style variants that players can earn by completing limited-time in-game challenges.

“We wanted to bring actual fear back to the island,” an Epic Games representative shared. “It’s not just about wearing a scary mask anymore. It’s about how you survive when you can’t see what’s coming next.”

The Grave Storm: Survival Gets Darker

That survival aspect centers around a massive change to the game’s core loop. The classic purple storm is transforming into the “Grave Storm.” It’s a visual and mechanical overhaul that will force players to completely rethink their late-game strategies.

Inside the Grave Storm, visibility drops to almost zero. A thick, ash-colored fog rolls over the terrain, muffled screams echo in your headphones, and standard HUD elements like the minimap flicker out of existence. To make matters worse, hostile AI monsters called “Hollows” rise from the ground to hunt down players who linger in the dark.

But Epic is giving squads a reason to brave the fog. High-tier loot, including legendary weapons and exclusive healing items, will spawn inside the Grave Storm at a much higher rate. To survive the darkness, you’ll need to find “Warding Lanterns.” This new utility item creates a small dome of protective light, temporarily keeping the fog and the monsters at bay.

New Weapons and Map Overhauls

The weapons pool is getting a spooky shakeup too. The fan-favorite Wood Stake Shotgun is returning with an upgraded legendary variant that deals bonus damage to the new fog monsters. There’s also a brand-new Mythic weapon called the “Reaper’s Scythe.” Tucking this weapon into your inventory grants a passive movement speed boost, and its active ability allows you to phase through solid walls for two seconds. It’s a tool designed for quick escapes—or terrifying ambushes.

Naturally, the map is getting a grim makeover. The central point of interest has been replaced by “The Whispering Fairground,” a ruined amusement park that looks suspiciously like an abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza location. Rusting rollercoasters tower over the area, and players can find interactive arcade cabinets that reward high-tier weapons if you can survive a quick, rhythm-based hacking mini-game.

To keep players coming back, Epic is also launching the “Fortnitemares Escape Challenges.” By participating in matches during the event, players can earn XP and unlock free themed cosmetics, including:

  • The Cursed Crow Glider
  • The Jack-o’-Lantern Pickaxe
  • The Spectral Fog Weapon Wrap

Fortnitemares 2026 officially kicks off on October 13 and runs through November 3. Epic has promised more surprises as the month progresses, hinting that a few more classic horror characters might make unannounced appearances in the shop. Get your squads ready, stock up on shield potions, and prepare to face the dark. This year, the storm is the least of your worries.
