Fortnite is about to get a lot bigger. Epic Games and Disney have finally revealed the first official details of “Disney Horizon,” a massive persistent universe built inside the hit battle royale game. This announcement comes months after Disney poured $1.5 billion into Epic, signaling a deep, long-term marriage of gaming and classic storytelling.

But Disney Horizon is not just a quick promotional crossover. It is a permanent digital world.

During a recent showcase, developers gave fans their first real look at what this collaboration actually looks like. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the project aims to merge Disney’s legendary franchises—including Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and classic animation—into a single, interconnected virtual space. It is a bold play to redefine what a virtual hangout can be.

Inside the Disney Horizon Universe

The debut footage showed off a sprawling digital space that feels like a futuristic, interactive Disney theme park. At the center sits a massive social hub. From there, players can travel to dedicated worlds, each styled after a different cinematic universe.

One area features a bustling city reminiscent of Zootopia, while another lets players explore the dusty canyons of Tatooine. There is even a sleek, neon-lit sector dedicated to Marvel’s Avengers. Players will not just walk around these spaces. They can fly starfighters, build custom houses, and engage in custom combat games.

Crucially, this is not a passive experience. Epic and Disney want players to be active creators. “This is about giving fans the keys to the kingdom,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences. “We want people to write their own stories in these worlds, not just watch ours.”

How It Works With Fortnite

Disney Horizon will exist directly inside the Fortnite application. You will not need to download a separate game. Instead, players can access it from the main lobby, much like they currently do with LEGO Fortnite or Rocket Racing.

This integration allows players to bring their existing Fortnite avatars into the Disney space. However, Epic confirmed that certain Disney-specific cosmetics and items will be exclusive to the Horizon universe to maintain the visual style of those classic worlds.

The technology behind the project relies heavily on Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). This toolset will eventually allow independent creators to build their own Disney-themed games and experiences. It is a massive shift for Disney, a company historically protective of its intellectual property.

Release Date and Road Map

While a project of this scale takes time, Epic Games did share a general timeline for the rollout.

  • Phase 1 (Late 2025): Limited alpha playtests will begin for select Fortnite players, focusing on the central social hub and basic customization tools.
  • Phase 2 (Mid 2026): The launch of the first major franchise worlds, specifically Star Wars and Pixar-themed zones.
  • Full Launch (Late 2026): Disney Horizon opens to the general public, complete with creator tools and a fully integrated marketplace.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney expressed his excitement about the technical milestones this project represents. “We are pushing Unreal Engine 5 to its absolute limits,” Sweeney said. “Building a persistent, highly detailed world that can support millions of players simultaneously is a massive hurdle, but we are getting there.”

What This Means for the Metaverse

For years, tech companies have tried and failed to make the virtual metaverse a reality. Most attempts fell flat because they lacked one crucial element: fun. Epic and Disney are trying to avoid that trap by building their universe on top of an already wildly popular game.

By using Fortnite as the foundation, they instantly tap into a community of over 200 million monthly active players. It is a pre-built audience ready to explore whatever Disney builds next. If successful, Disney Horizon could set a new standard for how media companies engage with younger audiences who prefer interactive entertainment over traditional television and movies.

For now, fans will have to wait for the first public tests next year to see if the reality matches the ambition.
