Epic Games kicks off Fortnitemares 2026, featuring a massive Stranger Things crossover and brand-new community-designed UEFN rogue-lite survival modes.

The Upside Down Swallows the Island

Epic Games is back with its annual Halloween tradition. Fortnitemares 2026 is officially live, and it might be the biggest iteration of the event yet. This year, the publisher is leaning hard into both pop culture nostalgia and community-generated content. The headline act is a massive crossover with Netflix’s Stranger Things, timed right as anticipation for the show’s final season reaches a fever pitch. But that is only half the story. Epic is also rolling out highly sophisticated, community-designed rogue-lite survival modes powered by the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). It is a double-whammy of horror and gameplay innovation.

A Final Battle with Vecna

On the Battle Royale side of things, the map has undergone a terrifying transformation. The Upside Down is actively bleeding into popular points of interest. Mega City and surrounding areas are overgrown with pulsing red vines and floating ash. Players who wander too close to these rifts will hear the distinct, ominous sound of a grandfather clock chiming—a clear nod to the series’ villain, Vecna.

Vecna is not just a cosmetic skin in the shop this year. He acts as a powerful roaming boss NPC on the map. Defeating him rewards players with Vecna’s Creepy Hand. This new mythic weapon allows players to lift opponents into the air telekinetically and hurl heavy objects across the battlefield. It is a chaotic addition that is already shaking up the end-game meta.

Eleven also makes a return with an updated, battle-worn style reflecting her appearance in the upcoming final season of the show. She is joined by new cosmetic packs for Dustin and Hopper. For players who prefer to earn their loot through gameplay, a series of free in-game challenges offer Stranger Things-themed rewards, including a Demogorgon weapon wrap and a miniature grandfather clock back bling.

Rogue-Lite Survival Takes Over UEFN

Beyond the standard Battle Royale island, Epic is pushing the boundaries of what its engine can do. For the first time, Epic has partnered with top-tier community developers to curate official rogue-lite survival experiences. These are not your standard creative maps. Built entirely inside UEFN, these modes introduce permanent death, randomized power-ups, and progression systems that carry over between matches.

Players drop into spooky, procedurally generated arenas, fight off waves of monsters, and collect gold to buy permanent stat upgrades. It feels less like a traditional shooter and more like a high-budget action RPG. Epic wants to show what UEFN is truly capable of, proving that these creators can build systems nobody thought were possible a year ago. It changes how people think about Fortnite as a platform, not just a battle royale game.

Rewards and Event Timeline

Classic Fortnitemares items have returned from the vault to round out the update. The Pumpkin Launcher is back in the loot pool, alongside the Witch Broom, which remains one of the best mobility tools in the game for rotating across the map. Candy buckets are scattered across residential areas, giving quick shields, speed boosts, or low-gravity effects when consumed.

Initial player feedback has been positive. Social media platforms are filled with clips of players getting caught in Vecna’s telekinetic grip. The rogue-lite modes, in particular, are seeing massive concurrent player numbers, rivaling some of the core Battle Royale playlists. This shift suggests that Epic’s heavy investment in UEFN is paying off, drawing in players who might have grown tired of standard shooter mechanics.

Performance-wise, Epic has rolled out a small patch alongside the update to handle the dense fog and dynamic lighting effects used in the event. Players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC can expect smooth 60 frames-per-second gameplay, even when the screen is filled with enemies. The event is scheduled to run until November 3, giving players three weeks to complete their quests and survive the horrors of the Upside Down.
