Epic Games is working to resolve massive login queues and matchmaking errors following the launch of the Fortnitemares 2026 update.

A Frustrating Start to a Spooky Season

Fortnite players are used to waiting. But this morning tested everyone’s patience.

The highly anticipated Fortnitemares 2026 update launched early today, bringing the usual mix of spooky skins, eerie map updates, and returning fan-favorite weapons. But before anyone could hunt monsters or try out the new gameplay modes, they had to get past the loading screen. For most, that proved impossible.

As soon as Epic Games brought the servers back online after scheduled maintenance, a digital tidal wave of eager gamers crashed the system. The infrastructure buckled under the weight. Within minutes, social media was flooded with screenshots of login timers ticking down from 45 minutes, an hour, or even longer. For the lucky few who managed to squeeze through the digital front door, things did not get much better. Matchmaking was broken. Players reported getting stuck on the “checking for updates” loop or receiving vague error messages when trying to queue for a match.

Epic Games Scrambles for a Fix

Epic Games was quick to acknowledge the mess. Taking to their official Fortnite Status account on X, the developer confirmed they were actively investigating the matchmaking failures. “We are aware that players are experiencing long matchmaking times and login queues as we launch Fortnitemares,” the company stated, adding that they were actively working on a fix to scale up capacity.

Downtime for the v31.30 update officially began at 4:00 AM ET, with matchmaking disabled about half an hour prior. Epic initially expected the servers to be offline for a standard three-to-four-hour window. But as the clock ticked past the morning rush, the transition back to live status was anything but smooth. The bottleneck left millions of players staring at loading screens instead of dropping onto the island.

Why the Hype Is Crashing the Servers

This has become a familiar ritual for the Fortnite community. Whenever a major seasonal event drops, the surge of returning players almost always causes some level of server instability. Still, Fortnitemares holds a special place in the game’s annual calendar. The Halloween event is historically one of Epic’s biggest player magnets, and this year is no different.

Teasers leading up to the 2026 event promised massive horror-themed crossovers, new spooky variations of classic Fortnite characters, and the return of the beloved PvE mode, Horde Rush. In Horde Rush, players team up to fight off waves of monsters, earning unique cosmetic rewards. Combine those features with a redesigned, fog-filled map and the unvaulting of iconic weapons like the Pumpkin Launcher, and it is easy to see why the servers melted under the sudden demand.

What Should Players Do Now?

For now, Epic’s engineering team is working behind the scenes to smooth out the bottleneck. They are trying to increase server capacity so players can actually experience the content they have been waiting weeks for.

Some players on Reddit and Discord have reported success by restarting their consoles or PCs, though Epic has not officially recommended this as a guaranteed workaround. In fact, most community managers suggest staying put in the queue rather than restarting. Dropping out of the queue could reset your place in line, forcing you to start the long wait all over again.

Historically, Epic is quite fast at resolving these launch-day bottlenecks. Usually, the worst of the traffic clears up within a few hours as the initial wave of excitement stabilizes and server-side hotfixes are deployed. But for those hoping to spend their morning grinding out the new creepy battle pass challenges, the delay is a major buzzkill. Until the developers give the all-clear, players will just have to keep an eye on those queue timers and wait for the fog to clear.
