Epic Games and Disney have released Chronicles of Horizon, a massive, persistent open-world RPG built entirely inside the Fortnite ecosystem.

Fortnite is no longer just a game about building walls and surviving a shrinking storm. Today, it became a massive, persistent role-playing universe. Epic Games and Disney have officially launched Chronicles of Horizon, an ambitious open-world RPG built entirely inside the Fortnite ecosystem using Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).

This is not a temporary promotional event or a simple custom map. It is a permanent, evolving world. Players can log in, create a character, complete quests, and level up. The most important part? Your progress saves when you log out. It is a major technical milestone for Epic and the first major fruit of Disney’s massive $1.5 billion investment in the gaming giant earlier this year.

A Living, Breathing World inside Fortnite

For years, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has talked about his vision for the metaverse. Chronicles of Horizon feels like the first real realization of that dream. The game places players in a sprawling world where Disney fantasy meets Epic’s signature style. The map is huge, featuring diverse biomes ranging from mystical forests to futuristic ruins.

Instead of the typical battle royale loop, players choose from three distinct classes at the start: Vanguard, Pathfinder, or Arcanist. Each class has its own skill tree, unique abilities, and gear sets. You can team up with friends or explore alone, fighting monsters, clearing dungeons, and gathering resources.

“We wanted to build something that felt like a standalone MMO, but lived where tens of millions of players already are,” says Saks Persson, Executive Vice President of Epic’s Fortnite Ecosystem. “With the latest UEFN tools, we can finally save complex player data, inventory, and quest states across sessions. It changes what is possible inside Fortnite.”

How the Partnership Came Together

The launch comes nine months after Disney announced its minority stake in Epic Games. While the companies have collaborated for years on Marvel and Star Wars crossover skins, this project represents a much deeper integration. Chronicles of Horizon features original lore, but keen-eyed players will quickly spot Disney’s influence.

The narrative centers around a fracturing multiverse. Elements of classic Disney stories are woven into the environment and questlines. Players might find themselves helping a mysterious figure who looks suspiciously like a retro sci-fi explorer, or uncovering artifacts that hint at classic fantasy kingdoms.

“Our goal was never to just put Disney characters into Fortnite,” says Sean Shoptaw, Executive Vice President of Disney Games. “We wanted to build a co-created space where players can live out their own adventures. This is just the beginning of a multi-year plan to connect Disney’s storytelling with Epic’s social entertainment platform.”

Overcoming the Technical Hurdles

Building a persistent RPG inside an engine designed for 100-player shooters was no easy task. Epic developers had to push the limits of their creator tools. The biggest hurdle was persistence. In a normal battle royale match, everything resets after fifteen minutes. In Chronicles of Horizon, your loot, experience points, and map discoveries remain tied to your account permanently.

The game supports servers of up to 50 players at a time. It uses a dynamic instancing system to keep the world feeling populated without sacrificing performance. When you enter a major town hub, you will see dozens of other players trading gear, forming parties, and showing off their rare mounts. Once you step out into the wild, the game seamlessly transitions you into adventure zones.

What is Next for the Horizon?

Epic and Disney have already committed to a long-term roadmap for the game. Season 1, titled “The Awakening,” is live starting today. The developers plan to release major content updates every two months, adding new regions, higher level caps, and fresh questlines.

The launch of Chronicles of Horizon could signal a massive shift in how big publishers think about game distribution. Instead of spending five years and hundreds of millions of dollars building a new engine from scratch, developers might start looking at Fortnite as a launchpad. If today’s release is any indication, the line between platform and game has just blurred forever.
